F. Kerr as directors of the comp-
any, with A. D. Goodenough " as
president and exofficie member of
the directors.
The all-important business was
the sompletion of a contract be-
tween the Southwestern Engi-
neering & Construction Co. and
the C. H. 4 G. Ry. Co. This con-
tact recognized the provisions
made in the contract between the
Hereford Commercial Club and
W. A. Cullen. This contract
calls for the construction of a line
of railroad through Hereford and
intersecting certain counties north
and south of Deaf Smith, the
charterprovisions being followed.
The Board of Directors were
pleased with the progress made
by the coustructicn company and
he early completion of the line
rom Hereford to Adrian.—

Mrs, Laura McConnell has
tendered her resignation as a
teacher in the Brownfield Public
School, to take effect just as
soon as another teacher can be
secured to take her place. Mrs.
McConnell considers it necessary
for her to join her husband and
little son in their new home in
Yoakum county, and will go
there as soon as it can be ar-
ranged for her to do so. This
action on her part is sincerely
regretted by every patron of the
school. She has shown herself
to be a teacher of superior tact
and ability as an instructor of
small children and is dearly
loved by every child in her de-
partment.

The auto garage of Yarborough
4 Ford at Midland was entirely
destroyed by fire early Saturday
night. Ten automobiles which
were in the Earage were also de-
stroyed. The fire is supposed to
have originated from a gasoline
explosion which occured while
the employees of the garage were
in the act of putting gasoline into
an auto. The fact that the floor
of the building was saturated with
oil caused the fire to spread so
rapidly that it was impossible to
extinguish the flames or save the
machines in the garage. With
the exception of a bucket brigade
Midland-has no fire fighting ap-
paratus, but they did excellent

Mr. W. A. Cullin:vice-president
and general manager f the
Southwestern Engineering 4 Con-
struction Company announced
before a meeting of the board of
directors Tuesday night that he
expected to take a party of
Hereford friends by special train
over the C, H. 4 G. from Here-
ford to Adrian on February 1st,
The grade is being pushed as rap-
idly as men and teams can move
the dirt and, just as soon as the
right of way has beep closed up
in the vicinity of Hereford, an-
other grading outfit will be put on
this end of the line. In fact,
there is but little to do now in
closing up this matter except
some legal forms to be complied
with, all of which are under way.
This done, the chief engineer
will put a force at work cross
sectioning the line from Hereford
norht to meet the work already
completed from Adrain south,
and then the graders will begin
moving dirt.
After the grading has been
finished, the laying of steel will
begin. ‘ If the Rock Island people
get out to Adrain by the time, the
C, H. 4 G. is ready, the track-
laying will begin from that place
but, if the extension of that line
has not been completed, the first
steel will be laid from Hereford
north. The steel will not be laid
by hand, but, instead by a mod-
ern track-laying machine, which
is capable of placing five or six
miles per day. This machine can
do the work of a hundred men.
The construction company has
proceded without talking much.
It has been the policy of the
management to do little talking
but a great deal of work. This
has met the endorsement of the
business interests of the- city as
they have seen that the companp
