Raymond Berry, Paris’ vet-
eran and likeable football
coach, not only left Gainesville
without a victory Friday night,
he left without his watch and his
raincoat. Berry misplaced the
raincoat following his team’s
54-8 rout by the Leopards and
his wife lost the watch while
watching the game from the
Leeper Stadium bleachers.
Coach Dub Wooten of the Leop-
ards has asked that anyone lo-
cating the raincoat and watch
to please bring them to Gaines-
ville High School.

Hindsight, as they say, is
20/20. But really, we should
have known better than to let
the Soviets have anything to
do with construction of the
U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
Naturally, they filled the
pillars, beams, and floors of
the building with the latest in
electronic eavesdropping de-
vices.
Now, according to Secre-
tary of State George Shultz,
the only option open to the
United States is to pull the
whole thing down and start
again — this time with Amer-
ican materials and American
workers.
Mr. Shultz says his decision
was made on the basis of an
engineering and security
study completed in August.
The new building was in-
tended to house the diplomat-
ic and classified functions of
the aging main embassy
building erected during the
early 1950s, but construction
was halted in 1985 after $22
million had been spent on it
because of evidence that it

was bugged.
The next administration in-
herits a king-size headache
over where to find the $300
million required for razing
and building a new embassy.
However, as President
Reagan said: “We have to do
it; we have no choice.”
State Department spokes-
man Charles Redman con-
firms that the United States
will not make the same mis-
take twice: The main ele-
ments of the new building
will be built in the United
States, transported to Mos-
cow under guard, and
watched over until the
project is finished, he says.
And only when that day
comes will the Soviets be al-
lowed to occupy their com-
pleted new embassy in north-
west Washington, D.C.
The embassy fiasco in Mos-
cow is another monument to
the folly of misplaced trust.
Perestroika and glasnost
notwithstanding, the United
States must never allow its
security to be compromised.
