two-story school beilding, pride
and joy of the community, was
totally demolished. Homes were
the hardest hit. swept out of ex-
istence as though they were
straw stacks
The forceful wind destroyed
the Baptist and Methodist
churches and the tabernacle
Hardly a whole plank of wood
could be used for reconstruction
so devastating was the blow.
“Compassion of the people of
Brownwood and other neighbor-
ing towns tor the people who
remained was tremendous"
said Charles Cabler. “They help-
ed bury the dead and provided
many things including food
clothing and other provisions."
Graves of the dead are still
to be found in Zephyr Cemetery
reminders of the worst disaster
to ever hit a Brown County com-
munity.
