HOUSTON i AP) - Four times within
a week, 12 times in the past nine
months, juries in the state’s largest city
have ordered the death penalty in
murder cases.
Among those sentenced to die were
two teen-agers, a woman, three men in
their early 20s. The crimes ranged from
the robbery-slaying of a jewelry store
owner to the shooting death of the
operator of an ice cream parlor to the
rape and fatal beating of a young girl.
In all of 1977, only six death sentences
were handed down in Houston and
secretary.
The chapter has 30 trained
First Aid instructors, and in the
past year 395 people were
certified as having passed
Standard Multimedia First Aid.
Hilton Gilliam, the instructor-
trainer for the chapter, taught
an instructors course with 11
people passing.
The chapter has trained five

helps those who lose their homes
and possessions by fire.
Forty volunteer women
knitted booties and crocheted
round lap robes for 500 patients
in Brown County nursing
homes. These are packaged in
plastic bags, tied with ribbon,
making a colorful, warm and
useful gift at Christmas time for
those who are confined to bed or
wheel chairs. About M com-
bined hours are spent on this
project.
Almost 6,000 meals were
delivered to an average of 38
people three times a week by
the church people of Brown-
wood. The meals are prepared
by the hospital and picked up
each delivery day by three
teams of two people to deliver.
Many of the teams are husband
and wife. This “Meals on
Wheels” program is maintained
