It was like old times in Texas City
last Friday night. About 300 soldiers
from Fort Crockett hiked over and
stayed all night. Business was good
all around, especially among the re-
freshment parlors and picture shows.
The meat business of the
country is conducted by various

Davison,
"euenth.
It is technically a violation of
a state statute to operate a pic-
ture theater on Sunday, conse-
quently when a demand is made
on an official to enforce the law,
he cannot but comply.
It has been represented to
County Attorney Theobald that a
great majority of the citizens of
Texas City wants the picture
shows closed cn Sunday. This
statement, The Times is inform-
ed, is challenged by some, who
claim the great majority of the
people of Texas City, who are
wage earners and have to work
during the week, do not want to
be enforced to go to Galveston
-andH custon for a little innocent
amusement. Sunday is their
only day of leisure. They should
go to church, and doubtless many
of them do. But if they want to
go to a picture show, or out on a
little picnic, or indulge in any
other harmless form of amuse-
ment, they should not be denied
the privilege.
Why discriminate against Tex-
as City in favor of Houston and
Galveston? Texas City needs
every cent of money earned here
kept at home, and it isn’t fair,to
say the least, to force the work-
ing people on their only off day
to do without a form of recrea-
tion which they enjoy and which
The Times contends is not harm-
ful, and does not offend anyone.
•—"It is the nature qI' mankind to
esent being driven into anything.
One cennot force his religion on
people. They must be won by
love—by the spirit of Jesus
Christ. To wield the “big stick”
and say you shall do this and
you shall not do that, will only
defeat the object sought to be
attained.
Far be it from us to fight the
church. We believe too strongly
in the teachings of the Savior to
do so. But we do believe that
the world has c utgrown the spirit
of Puritanism, and that an at-
tempt to abridge the personal
freedom of an individual will
prove a boomerang and result in
more harm than good.
Will the vely few who are
trying to enforce the closing of
picture shows agree to leave the
matter to a vote? We make this
proposition in good faith. Sup-
pose we leave it to the qualified
voters—men and women—of
this city, whether or not they
want the picture shows closed
on Sunday.

CONGRESS
Seventh Congressional District
Judge Clay Stone Briggs, a home
man, is a candidate for congress.
Judge Briggs has an exceptionally good
record as a jurist, and is a leading man
of affairs. He will make a splendid
representative of our interests in the
nation's capital, and his claims should
be given the most careful consideration
of our people.

listed in the aviation corps last Decem-
ber and who has been in training at the
various flying fields at San Antonio,
Waco and Omaha, Neb., has been made
a machine gun instructor and transfer-
red to Los Angeles, Cal., for duty.
Bryan writes that while he appreciates
his promotion, he was sorely disappoint-
ed as he had his over-seas outfit i eady
and was “all set” to “go across.”
Like all the other young huskies in the
army, he wants to be in on the big
push when the tide turns and the trip
to Berlin begins.
