Eagles Open

In Alvord
Valley View’s Eagles blow the
lid off their 1954 District 10-B
season Friday night on foreign
soil.
Coach Jack King’s Birds hit
the road to Alvord for their first
try at a circuit foe and they’ll be
slight underdogs in the affray,
which is slated for an 8 p. m. be-
ginning.
The Eagles have been plagued
this year with amazingly bad
luck and a number of the club’s
star players have been lost to
the team due to illness, injuries
and other mishaps.
The greatest loss to the team
came when Tommy Turner, star
hackfielder, became ill and was
lost for the year, then another
staggering blow was received
when outstanding lineman. Ken-
neth Martin, suffered an injury
that also benched him for the
remainder of the campaign.
Several others have been put
out of action for various and
sundry reasons, but the Eagles
are still in there fighting to re-
gain the early form that gave
them two quick victories this
season. Since those wins, how-
ever, the injury plague dropped
a heavy hand on the Birds and
two losses now give them a sea-
son slate of 2-2.
Coach A. E. Barnes’ Alvord
Bulldogs, bolstered bv five let-
termen. have a record of one
win and two defeats. They’ll be
larger and maybe just a bit
tougher than the Eagles and their
home field advantage will be an-
other factor in their behalf.
Barnes, too. may be somewhat
familiar with Valley View, since
he was once the head coach at
that Cooke county school.

Our old looking glass did better than usual last week in its

two were wrong and one resulted in a tie. Th it record helped our

Hickman (205) and Humphrey
1178), Kilgore backfielders, will
be particularly remembered by
local fans for their work with
the Bulldogs of the past season.
Vernon Mitchell (200), Bill
Gumbert (165>, Ken Kline (190)
and Forest Johnson (155) are
Kilgore youngsters that are apt
to see plenty of action in the
Friday tussle, though they are
not listed as starters.
Kilgore, which compiled a rec-
ord of eight wins, two losses and
one tie in 1953, runs from the
conventional T-formation. They
have been known to employ the
single wingback form of attack
in past seasons and they could
surprise the Leopards with that
formation Friday. \
Crucial Loop
Tussle Slated
In Whitesboro
Whitesboro’s Bearcats, held to
a scoreless tie in their initial
District 13-A outing last week,
face their toughest opposition of
the season Friday night.
Coach George Reagan's Bear-
cats are scheduled to play host
to the rugged Whitewright Tigers
- reputedly the No, 1 power in
the circuit—and all eyes of 13-A
will be turned toward that con-
flict.
Kickoff time has been set for
the regular 8 p.m. beginning and
a huge crowd is predicted for
Bearcat stadium to view the
home towners in action against
the conference favorites.
Last Friday Whitesboro battled
favored Cooper to a 0-0 loop tie
on a muddy field, while Coach
Sam Montgomery’s Tigers suf-
fered their initial non-conference
setback of the 1954 campaign.
The Bengals dropped a muddy
13-12 contest to Rockwall in one
of the real surprises of 13-A play.
Whitewright has never defeated
Rockwall in the history of the
school and this season proved no
different from any other.
Prior to that game, the Tigers
had ripped Commerce, Bells and
Leonard to live up to advance ex-
pectations.
Whitesboro was crippled last
week when they tied the Cooper
outfit. Fullback Charlie Sapp,
Quarterback Charlie Winchester
and End Paul (Toad) Garnet
were among the ailing players
and the loss of that trio probably
laid the foundation for the dead-
lock.
They are expected to be ready
for action this week, but even
their presence may not be enough
to offset the power of the Tigers
from Whitewright.

expected to get off to a fast start
in circuit play.
Bridgeport and Pilot Point
have handed the Bugs losses in
their prior pair of starts, but
Coach Bynum Smith’s Saint Jo
eleven has yet to win a game and
their inept performances to date
makes them a lightly regarded
10-B aggregation.
The Panthers are big and, at
times, they have displayed exten-
sive offensive talent, however,
for the most part they have
been unable to perform consist-
antly enough to annex their first
win. Last week they bowed to
Callisburg 13-6 in the opening
10-B hassle of the ’54 campaign.
Era boasts plenty of heft, but
Coach Grundy has been far from
satisfied after watching his co-
horts in action in early games
this season. After running to
wins over B teams from Henri-
etta and Gainesville, the Bugs
slowed down considerably and
dropped their next two games in
a row.
Both outfits appear to be in top
physical condition and a large
crowd is expected for the brand
new stands in Era.

state in Conference 3A, came to
Gainesville to meet the home
town Leopards in a fight for the
bi-district title.
Coach Ty Bain's Bulldogs were
confident of a victory and critics
had them tabbed as probable
state champs, but they didn’t
reckon with an inspired, unher-
alded Circus town crew that bat-
tled the visitors to a 14-14 dead-
lock, winning the game on pene-
trations.
Kilgore fans were stunned, as
were the players and particularly
the coach, and this season the
Bulldogs are primed and eager to
gain some manner of revenge
over the Leopard club that spoiled
their '53 playhouse.
Game time has been set for 8
p.m. in Kilgore and the hosts
will be heavily favored to reap
that revenge over a Gainesville
aggregation that has copped but
one victory this season in three
starts.
Coach Ed Dusek’s minions,
however, have not resigned them-
selves to taking a licking from
the Bain men. Spirit at Leopard-
ville has been greater than usual
this past week and indications
are that the Gainesville gridders
may put up one of their most en-
thused nonconference battles of
the 1954 season.
No Injuries
No injuries have been reported
from the Leopard camp, after
three days of real head-knocking
action, however, several spirited
battles for starting honors have
made opening posts for the Fri-
day game uncertain.
In one of the most outstanding
battles for a starting position.
J. W. Kuether displayed amazing
skill from a fullback spot during
the week’s work to really chal-
lenge Scott Clark, regular, for
starting honors Friday.
Coach Dusek was still unde-
cided about which lad will start
the game and it appears a cinch
that both will see considerable
action during the fiasco, which
promises to be fast and rugged.
Kilgore owns a win and a loss
for the campaign and last week
they blanked Paris 19-0. Paris,
with Larry Click still in the
driver’s seat, was unable to score
a single point against the rough
and tumble Bulldogs, giving in-
dication of their defensive skill.
Kenneth Lillard and Lloyd
Nichols will be the starting ends
for the Leopards again this week,
with Gene Armstrong and big
Jim Locke at tackles and Tommy
Carr and Pat Ralston at guards.
James Miller. with his "lucky"
No. 13. will open at center, while
Richard Hackler, Jackie Holt.
Morris Morgan and either Kue-
ther or Clark start in backfield
spots. ,
, Tall David West and roly poly,
red headed Gale Scott may be
defensive starters in the Leopard
plan of attack. West. 185-pound-
er. may handle defensive end
chores, while Scott (180) holds
down a defensive tackle spot.
Twelve Lettermen
Kilgore with 12 lettermen, in-
cluding five regulars, on their
squad, presents quite a problem
for the Leopards. They are not
as hefty as in '53, but they have
plenty of experience and are cur
rently rated as the eighth best
