WASHINGTON - President
Bush wants an end to the con-
troversy over the travels of White
House chief of staff John Sununu
who allegedly had remarked that
Jewish groups were among those
v working against him or encourag-
ing others to demean him for his
Middle East views.
"Very candidly, no laws having
—

j been violated, I think we ought
| to move into something more
important," Bush said recently at
his summer home in Kenne-
bunkport, Maine. "I respect him,
I I value his advice and counsel,
| and I am hoping this matter is
laid to rest." *
Bush's statement at a news con-
ference followed Sunuhu's iden-
tical letters to the Conference of
Presidents of Major American
Jewish Organizations and to the
Anti-Defamation League and tele-
phone calls to other Jewish lead-
ers denying that he blamed them
for the criticism for many weeks
over Sununu's use of govern-
ment aircraft and cars for politi-
cal and personal business.
