County Judge Richard Ray
said Monday that the county
could expect an expense of a
quarter of a million dollars in
reappraising property for
purposes of taxing, but that it

having a place to take stray
animals rather than having
them dumped in the country
to form threats to the health
of the animals and people of
the county.
All interested persons are
urged to be at the September

Dr. Deen said that now is an
excellent time for the county
to seek funds because there is

project at the present.
Dr. Shepler outlined the
steps to follow to secure an
animal shelter. First a non
profit corporation, a Humane
Society for the county, must
be formed and officers
elected. Next an ordinance
must be passed by the county.
Dr. Deen Mid that several’
ordinances are being studied*
and one will be recommended
to the commissioners of Van
Zandt County. (It will likely
emphasize vaccination of pets
and restraint of strays.) The
county can then apply for a
government grant to build the
shelter and can then contract
with the county Humane
Society to operate it. Dr. Deen
said that veterinarians within
the county usually rotate the
responsibility of giving
emergency medical aid.

Canton Chamber of
Commerce is currently taking
a survey of Cantonites and
areas as to whether the public
would like to have a
Community Chest fund.
Many merchants have
voiced their opinions that they
are approached by so many
different organizations that it
has become staggering. By
having one Community Chest
fund, or a similar
organization, would cut
down on the number of
calls tor contributions
throughout the year. “This is
not to say that this is intended
to do away with the
collections for local activities,

president of the Canton
Chamber of Commerce.
Many of the merchants
have often stated through the
years that they would prefer
