Jacob M Howard,
Affections are thoughts to her,
The measures of her hours ;
Her feelings have the fragrancy.
The freshness of young flowers;
And lovely passions, changing oft,
So fill her, she appears
The image of themselves by turns—
The idol of past years !
Of her bright face one glance will trace
A picture on the brain,
And of her voice in echoing hearts
A sound must long remain:
But memory, such as mine of hers,
So very much endears,
When death is nigh, my latest sigh
Will not be life’s, but hers.
Quick,Tike the glow of early mom,
The blushes spread o’er cheek and brow;
She bends that fair and graceful head-
Those brownest eyes are dewy now!
And then she raised to mine the lips
That should be mine forever more;
And all the earth, and air, and sky,
Was glorious as ne’er before !
Through all my life, in good or ill,
Till hushed in silence of the grave,
My lips with glad delight will feel
That first warm kiss my darling gave !

Half hid the face so wondrous fair;

Yet in their depths I fain had read

REOEE2
Loveliness.—It is not your neat
dress, your expensive shawl, or your
pretty fingers, that attract the atten-
tion of men of sense. They look be-
yond these. It is the true loveliness
of your nature that wins and contin-
ues to retain the affections of the
heart. Young ladies sadly miss it
who labor to improve outward looks
while they bestow not a thought up-
on their minds. Fools may be won
by gew gaws and fashionable showy
dresses, but the wise and substantial
are never caught gy such traps. Let
modesty be your dress. Use pleas-
ant and agreeable language, and
though you may not be courted by
fop or sot, the good and truly great
will love to linger in your steps.

I filled this cup to one made up
Of loveliness alone,
A woman, of her gentle sex,
The seeming paragon—
Her health ! and would on earth there
stood
Some more of such a frame,
That life might be all poetry,
And weariness a name.
Babies’ Linen.—An intelligent
young mother inquired some days
since how she could best preserve her
child’s linen clean and sweet when
changed frequently through the day.
I directed her never to dry it before
the fire, but in the sun and open air,
if the weather permitted. You thus
not only avoid saturating the air of
your rooms with the volatile and
poisonous gasses driven out of the
linen, but the sun’s rays have powers
of cleansing and disinfecting, which
artificial heat has not, and will puri-
fy and preserve the linen, she follow-
ed my directions, but. as is too often
the practice, dried and aired it in the
nursery window. Her fastidious
husband remonstrated in vain against
this unseemly exposure. Believing
that if she saw her practice as others
saw it she would desist, he so direct-
ed the afternoon walk as to bring
the nursery window into full view
from the central part of the town.
Stopping abruptly, he pointed to the
offending linen flapping conspicuous-
ly in the breeze, and asked sarcasti-
cally : “ My dear, what is that dis-
played from our window ? ” " Why,”
she proudly replied, “ that is the flag
of our Union.” Conquered by this
pungent retort, he saluted the flag
with a swing of his hat, and pressing
his wife’s arm closer within his own,
sang, as they walked homward :
“And long may it wave."
— Hearth and Home.
Thoughts to Remember.—-We
cull these wise words from Dr. Guth-
rie:
The meanest are mighty with God
the mightiest mean without him.
Would we do our Heavenly Father
justice, we must look on Calvary as
an Eden.
We have no faith in terror disso-
dated from tenderness. We trust
more to the process of drawing than,
driving men to Jesus.
Like the inn of Bethlehem given
to lodge meaner guests, a heart full
of pride has no chamber within which
Christ may be bo;n "in as the hope
of glory.”
The magnet which drew a Savior
from the skies was not our merit, but
our misery.
None are so sure to lie in Jesus'
bosom, as those who lie lowest at Je-
sus’ feet.
That man gave the atheist acrush-
ing answer, who told him that the
very feather with which he penned
the words, " There is no God,” refu-
ted the audacious lie.

r\H.S superior grain has many qualifi-
L cations that should recommend it to
every farmer in the country. It matures
in less time than oats, it is raised with as
little care or expense as any other grain;
it appears more like Millet than wheat,
but is a very different grain; it makes a
very good flour; it is believed, from ex-
periments made the last season in this
county, that it will average from
100 To 150 Bushels Per Acre
as a field crop. It will yield from 2 to 4
ton of fodder, that is as good for stock as
limothy or clover bay; the grain is equally
good as corn for feed for stock; it weighs
50 to 56 pounds per bushel; it will stand
the most severe drough, it will ripen
while the stalk is yet green and mature
witbin seventy days from the time of
planting; two crops can be grown in thia
locality in one year.
Sample head, 13 in length, can
be seen at the Telegraph office, and ref-
ierences given to a number of reliable and
intelligent farmers who grew it and saw
it growing in this county, the past season.
For sale in packages containing enough'to
plant one acre S3; half an acre $2; smaller
packages sent by mail, post paid, on re-
ceipt of price. Address,
