SCIENTISTS DISAPPOINTED
BUT MOST FOLKS AMAZED
BY DARKNESS AT MIDDAY
Due to Heavy Clouds Only a Few Successful Photo-
graphs Made From the Ground But Navy Air-
men Get Excellent Pictures of Corona and
Fleeting Shadow That Crept Down at
Moment of Totality.
San Diego. CaL Sept. 11.—Dis-
appointing to science but a thing of
wonder to ordinary folks; darkness at
midday a colorful magnificent but
almost uncanny spectacle — this in
brief describes the total eclipse of
the sun witnessed in San Diego and
its vicinity yesterday.
However many of the scientists
found consolation in the results at-
tained by means of photographs from
the airplanes that climbed above the
heavy bank of clouds that covered the
city.
Navy airmen scattered over a wide
area and flying at altitudes varying
from 7000 to 16000 feet succeeded
in getting excellent moving pictures
not only of the corona but also faint
photographs of the fleeting shadow
that swept down at the moment of
totality.
Great Ball of Fire.
A great ball of fire atop the sun
was sighted by Lieut. Leland Webb
TUESDAY.
from an altitude of 16.000 feet over
Point Hueneme. He reported that at
12:52 o'clock the brilliant shafts of
light from the corona stretching into
the heavens for millions of miles were
suffused in a soft glow that re-
sembled pale moonlight etched with
marvelous colors.
The only successful photographs
made from the earth are believed to be
ones made by Professor James Wor-
thington of London and Dr. Alfred
Burton professor emeritus of astron-
omy in the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
Four Pictures Successful.
Professor Worthington stated last
night that four of the negatives de-
veloped by him were almost perfect
and would rank with the best ever
made during a solar eclipse.
Professor Worthington and Dr.
Burton headed an expedition at an ob-
servation station established north of
Santa Barbara. Weather conditions
there ncrc more favorable than at any
other spot on the Pacific coast ac-
cording to the scientists. The equip-
ment used was nn especially con-
structed ceolostat.
Chickens Are Stolen.
Ixk Angeles Cal.. Sept. 11.— Three
hundred chickens thought night had
come when darkness accompanied yes-
terday's eclipse of the sun and went
to their eoo’is at Artesia a suburb
but were prevented from going to
roost by thieves who took them ttynew
homes according to reports to the
sheriff's office here.
