Rudy Knepper, Sioux City and Prince-
ton golf star, has his eye adjusted in
the general direction of the intercol-
legiate championship this next June.
Rudy, having reached the last eight two
years running in the national amateur,
is quite keen to make up his golf def-
icit in intercolle giate circles where
last June he was far away from his best
form. He is not only a great golfer,
but a strong competitor, one of the
longest hitting wallopers of the field.
Knepper grips his club far down the
shaft, but takes a cut at the ball after
the manner of Dempsey, delivering his
best right hook.

These safe, pleasant tablets cost only
a few cents and millions now take
them instead of sickening quinine.
The veteran Galveston Pirates won
with their usual ease from the soccer
team from the steamship Novian Sun-
day in Houston, the final score being 3
to 1. The Novian team was substituted
for the Greystoke Castle crew when
that vessel was late in arriving. . •
The sailors took things in their own
hands for the first twenty minutes and
kept the crack Pirate eleven working
on the defense. Fast work by Ander-
son, Galveston goal keeper, kept the
mariners away from the goal. Owens
succeeded in shooting a goal for the
islanders in the first half. In the sec-
ond period the Pirates got down to
work and goals by E. Grossman and
Littlejohn resulted.

Charles’ O’Hearn, Yale star, has drawn

Frank Jones, the Memphis sports-
man, known for many years along the
Grand Circuit highway, nominates
“Pop” Geers, of Tennessee as the top
model of the competitive field. “Geers
is not only one of the greatest com-
petitives that ever lived,” says Mr.
Jones, “a great competitor after fifty-
five years of harness racing, but in the
way of remarkable character he has
never had a superior. I have never
heard him make a statement that was
not exactly 100 per cent the truth, and
this is something that few humans can
claim.” Fifty-five years of giving each

the Indian famous on the gridiron. His
record at Pittsburgh was among the
great achievements of the last ten
years and now he takes a whirl at Stan-

other section has known his instruc-

Smith at California will be a feature,
but Warner may need another year to

Luis Angel Firpo comes with the
heavy responsibility of being the first
athlete with a chance to put South
America on the map of sportdom. Ar-

made a big start in this direction, but
we are referring now to individual
performers. South America is on her
way in the big sporting revival, and
if some big-fisted son such as Firpo

the boom just north and south of the

no one who has inspected the vast

he has no chance. A 16-inch shell
