NOVe,
Annexation
is opposed
by bureau
The Calhoun County Farm
Bureau voted on a resolution
Monday that requests that
cities not be allowed to annex
agricultural land within city
limits without showing good
cause as to why it should be
annexed without consent of the
owner.
The City of Port Lavaca is cur
rently planning to annex farm
land north and west of town.
The local Farm Bureau also
resolved at the policy meeting
to request the repeal of the law
from which Texas Tax Codes
Sec. 23.56, Sec. 23.57 and Sec.
23.76 derive.
The tax code requires pay
ment by landowner of five years
retroactive taxes at market val
ue plus interest by all taxing
entities when land is changed
from agricultural use to some
other use.
Both resolutions will be pre
sented at the state convention
on Nov. 25.
The membership also re
elected directors Dwain Nun
ley, Charles Krause Sr. and
Charles Krause Jr. Newly
elected directors include Her-
man Morris and Tony Daniel.

Calhoun County Commission-
ers Court Wednesday awarded
the 1991 fuel contract to Diebel
Oil Company, the only bidder
for the right to supply fuel and
lubricants to the county.
The court also awarded the
contract for ambulance floater
insurance to Foss, Cates and
Hudson. The agency was the
only bidder.
Commissioners approved a
contract with Aransas County
for juvenile detention service.
State law prohibits the coun-
ty from housing juvenile offen
ders in the same facility with
adults and the county does not
have a certified juvenile
facility.
Juvenile offenders from Cal-
houn County are transported to
Rockport and detained.
A new purchasing policy
proposed by the board of mana-
gers of Memorial Medical Cen-
ter Hospital was approved by
the court.
The board had requested
permission from the court to
adopt a uniform purchasing
policy for the hospital when it
was discovered most depart-
ments were acting as their own
purchasing agents and then
submitting bills for payment to
the accounting department.
Central accounting did not
have a policy in place to cordi-
nate purchase orders with bills.

Years of friendship
Since Sandcrab Stadium was built in 1956, Earl Colley (1) and Dr.
A.W. Kelton (r) have been working the scoreboard. “We used to
walk up and down the Held with a big box to keep score before the
press box,” Colley said. Today the two men keep comfortable and
their enduring friendship on going in the all electronic press box.
Colley and his wife Audrey have four children, Lester, Debbie
(who is a band director at Crockett), Margaret (who helps in the
press box) and Charlie. Doc Kelton and his wife Elizabeth have
two children, David and Karen. The next time you are at a game,
watch the scoreboard and know that it is in the capable hands of
two of Calhoun’s staunchest supporters. Give them a handshake
and thank them for many years of great work. (Wave Photo by

the hospital. Hayes will report
back to the court.
The area currently being
used by the Home Health Agen-
cy will be disrupted during the
expansion and renovation
construction.
Approval of the design and
development plan for the hos-
pital expansion and renovation
was postponed because the
architect was not ready with a
presentation.
Last month the court sold the
$7.5 million in bonds to finance
the hospital project and the
architects were scheduled to
present final plans to the court
Wednesday.
The court is scheduled to
advertise for bids from contrac-
tors in December and award a
contract in January.
Commissioners approved
two change orders for the new
county library and authorized
the county judge to sign the cer-
tificate of substantial comple-
tion for the project.
Marian Rhodes was
appointed the lay representa-
tive for the library.
The budgets for the district
clerk and county court-at-law
were amended.
The district clerk needed an
additional $6000 to pay for
court appointed attorneys and
the court-at-law needed more
funds for jury payments.
Commissioners passed a
resolution approving a munici-
pal rider to the lease for ultra
sound equipment from Diason-
ics, Inc. at the company’s
request.
