Questions for Willie Black Promising Joe’s
back tax expert: Are you not the paid repre-
sentative of the Single Tax League? If you are
put in the tax commissioner’s office will you
enforce the tax laws and make Promising Joe
and other back taxers come across with their
taxes? Tell the people Willie; that’s a fine little
man.

Young America: or A Perfect Come-Back
His teacher’s report concerning Willie’s progress at school was not very encouraging so Willie’s papa
called him to account.
“Do you know” said he. in his most judicial manti' r ‘ that when President Wilson was your age he
was the brightest boy in school?’’
“Yes papa" answered Willie “and now since he has become your age he is President of the United
States."
Don’t you think Willie’s papa should have ordered a few gallons of RIEGLER’S and stood treat to his
neighborhood?

The Sandman Story
for Tonight
THE TOYS VXD THE FAIRY
<IL EEN.
I expect that all you little folk have
wondered many times how the pla\
room toys happened to have the power
to sneak when the hour of 12 struck
each night.
It has been said it all came from a
Goblin who overheard the fairies talk-
ing one night and he told a Gnome.
who told an Elf. who told a Sprite and
he told—but what matters that? What
you want to hear is the story so here
it is just as 1 heard it once upou a
time:
A Little Fairy was at the top of a
tree looking at the leaves to see that i
each one was out nnd doing its work
when the wind come along and tossed
her right on the sill of a window.
It happened to be the play room at
the top of a house and before she knew
it the Fairy was so interested it\ what
she saw that she quite forgot her duty
about looking after the leaves.
All night she spent in the play room
looking a^ the toys and flitting about
among them thinking it quite the
mo^t fascinating land she had ever vis-
ited.
Now when it was time for her to go
—that is when the sun ramc up over
the hill instead of going right home
and going to bed. as all good little
fairies are expected to do this one lin-
gered in a shady place in the dell.
When all the sister fairies came along
she stopped them nnd told about the
wonders of the land she had found.
Not a wink of sleep did any of them
little fairies get that day so eager
were they to go with their sister to
this land she had discovered.
Just as soon as it was the magic
hour off they flittered without the
Fairy tjueen hdvins to say one word
about it being time to go to their
work.
"Btrange" said the Queen. "I never
knew my children to Lie so eager to
start before. 1 almost think there
must be something going on which I
do m»t understand and I believe I will
watch them if this hapi»ens again."
Such a good lime as all the fairies
had that night in the play room but
not a stroke of work did they do.
There were no hungry children sur-
prised with a magic table appearing
before them laden with goodies or a
warm fire suddenly flaming up the
fireplace of the poor old woman who
was cold and hungry. No. these little
fairies thought of nothing but play.
They went home and into their beds
they all tumbled without even taking a
drop of dew for breakfast they were
so tired.
The Queen looked at them all asleep
and shook her head. "I will find out
tonight." she said ami she did for she
followed those little fairies straight to
the playroom mid. found out how they
had shirk’d their work.
< »h ! How ashamed they looked w hen
the tjuceii made herself seen. But she
did not scold; instead she told them
all to flitter away as fast as they
could to (heir work.
Then she turned to ilm toys mid one
by one she touched them with her
wand saying:
"At the Magic Hour of Twelve each
night
You all shall talk till it is light.”
t if course (he little fairies went
again when they found a chnm-e.^to
the play room; but to their surprise
they’ found the toys all talking and
where there is talking and noise fairies
seldom stay unless the Queen has sent
them to do some good work.
So off they all flew ami after that
every night they went to their work as
they should while the toys have ever
since that time had the power to talk
after twelve though 1 doubt very much
if one of them knows just how it came
about.

XVIII—AX IM ITATION TO
I.IXCH.
I
1 wondered whether he would cull me j
at eleven o’clock as usual. I hoped he)
would not but had made up my mind 1‘
would say nothing to antagonize him if j
he did. I was still hurt but 1 had n
hope that he would apologize: that thisj
one experience would be enough to check j
his impetuous nature; that what I had I
suffered in humiliation because of his
violence together with his remorse would
be enough to protect me in the future.
He called at eleven sharp.
"That .\’»u Bess?” he inquired his
voire a little eager I thought though it 1
might have been his nervousness.
"Yes Crittenden.” I replied.
"How are you?” be asked.
"All right Crittenden" 1 said as
friendly as possible. "Are you all
right ?”
- "Yes." be said and then: "By the |
way. Bess roiiie down town and have
lum heon with me. We’ll go to the bang-
est-up place in town.” He waited for i
my answer.
Swiftly I thought of bis invitation J
and what had happened loss than tweii j
ty-four hours before. I a^k'-d myself if I
I could go to luncheon with him and cn-l
joy it. I was a little afraid I could tmtJ
His voice again: "Please. Bess. And'
I’ve got a surprise for you too” he
addr’L
"A surprise!”
"Yes afterward" hr >nid. His voice
was \cry pleading. Then I told him I .
would lunrh with him and the fervency]
with which he thanked me for accepting
his invitation almost made me feel guil-|
ty. But 1 blushed the next moment fori
my weakness of feeling as I remembered *
the encounter in the bathroom. And
too. I almost regretted that I had ae-
• epted. I knew that many a woman un-
der lilvA circtimstances. would have been
parking her trunks instead of accepting
a lum heoi) invitation hut J—well 1 whs
weak iu my overpowering love for him
weak- and strong!
He met me on time. It was the first
time he had been punrtual after I had
become his wife. During our courtship
he always was ahead of time nnd though
a little nervous and excited in his man-
ner. he greeted me with such a weleome.
with such gladness that he fairly swept
me off my feet. It. made tm* so happy
for the time that I was quite ready to
forgive him anything to have a weh-ome
like that. It was like my lover return-]
ing Io me to love me forever afterward. I
True to his promise he took me to the?
"bangest-up” place in tow n. The hoad '
waiter escorted us at once to a table (
Crittenden obviously had reserved nnd
on which in n handsome vase nodded on
their long stems two dozen or so Ameri-|
can beauty roses. Ho knew* they wore
my favorites. Indeed I thought my l<»v-i
er had come back!
The bouquet had been a revelation t<»
me as had Crittenden’s wonderful greet-1
ing. Another surprise was thnt he had
ordered the luncheon in advance. And :•
most elaborate though dainty menu foe.*
Keeping pace with his courtesy in choo< J
ing mv favorite flowers he had indudod [
only dishes of which I was oxcoedingh t
fond. He had sot. out. evidently to out ■'
do himself in entertaining me.
I enioyed the luncheon for Crittenden :
devoted himself to me. He talked al-
most constantly of impersonal thim:< aH| 1
the while as though making an effort t'"
avoid any possible reference to ourM-lve-j
which might suggest the very recent
break between us. I allowed him to goi '
on and my replies to him were |iom*<tlvl
devoid of the slightest hint of the j*
row that had come to me because of hi*
outbreak.
"Won’t von be late getting hm k♦" I*' |

"That so?" I smiled.

"4 >h !" I cried. “I thought the surprise)
yon spoke of was the luncheon itself! ’q
"Pshaw.” he belittled "thi* is not oven .]

*'Goody!” I exclaimed feeling hbR
