Remember when the Rolling
Stones started playing music in
the early sixties? They turned off
millions of respectable people
'cause the Stones were dirty,
mean, greasy, and played a
pretty good rendition of the
black mans' blues. Well it's the
70s and J. Geils and his band
have come out of Boston doing
the blues. Just like the Stones,
except they're meaner, greasier
and are much closer to the blues
roots. They've been together a
while and their playing sounds
like it. Geils does an exceptional
lead and Magic Dick’s harp
playing is the best job by a white
man this side of John Mayall.
This group has, no doubt, felt
the blues enough to play it right.
The lyrics are very cities/slum
oriented. J. Geils' Band probably
won't sell out here among the
masses. It's too close to true
blues. They'd probably be just as
happy in the south side of
Chicago playing their music.

The Drama Department at
New Mexico State again lived up
to my high expectations with
their presentation of the
Broadway musical "Fiddler On
The Roof". The drama group
there seems to work well
together in both University and
Community productions as I
have had the pleasure of seeing
many of the cast in other Las
Cruces productions.
The major complaint about
the entire production is the lead,
Tevye, (Hershel Zohn) who
needs some diction lessons. The
ability to sing always adds to a
classified as a musical and walked

remember any single piece of
music. Usually I'm humming the
theme sone or at least something
from the score, as "76

Man" or "Sunrise-Sunset" from
"Fiddler", but from 1776, an
award winning musical, I retain
no music whatsoever. Perhaps
this stems from the subject
matter, which is the Continental
Congress of the United States in
1776. It is the story of the men
who declared independence for
our country, and so poignantly
brought the historical figures to

deplored strongly the way the
lead, Reginald Bunthoren was

Since then I've gone back to the

his job as the director. This
seems to be a rather common
error in educational fine arts
when the director plays in a
production. Nonetheless my
irritation with Mr. Zohn wore off
as the show progressed because
he compensated for his faults in
many ways. His eyes sparkle and
dance all across the stage, helping
to create the magic so necessary
to the character of Tevye. His
walk, body build and facial
expressions exactly fit his part,
which, with the exception of he
above complaints he carried off
beautifully.
Three of the outstanding
characters were Motel (Charles
Lewis) a tailor who marries
Tevyes daughter and who did an
excellent job on his solo
"Miracles of Miracles"; Golde
(Cornelia Easterling) who plays
Tevye's wife and so stoically
bears all the joys and sorrows of
their life; and Yente (Frances
Williams) who plays the
matchmaker with all her devious
methods of creating a suitable, if
not ideal match for her clients.
Juan Molinari, who also
played in the show, did the
choregraphy which he
reproduced from the original
Broadway production. To have
such a large cast move in
anything like unison is difficult,
but to have them effectively and
gracefully do so is even more
difficult, Mr. Molinari did well in
both counts.
Tradition, around which the
show is built, is a difficult thing
to carry on when the entire
world is changing around you, a
tradition of doing a good show
consistently is hard to create and
harder to keep, but the Drama
Department at New Mexico State
is rapidly building the tradition
of consistently fine productions.
