proposal
Early voting began last week for an
amendment to the Texas Constitution
that would increase the homestead
exemption from $5,000 to $15,000.
The average amount saved on proper-
ty taxes per year would be $142 under
the plan, according to state figures. The
revenue lost to school districts would be
made up with about $1 billion saved
from the state budget.
The ballot provision also would allow
senior citizens to transfer the freeze on
their property tax rates if they move to
another home.
Early voting continues through Aug.
5 at the Kendall County Courthouse,
204 E. San Antonio St., from 8 a.m. to 5
p.m.

Volunteers needed for creek cleanup
Volunteers are being requested by Berges Fest, Boerne
Fire Department, the City of Boerne, and other organiza-
tions to help on August 16 with the cleanup of the Cibolo
Creek waterway through Boerne.
Persons with chainsaws, trucks, equipment, and stamina
are being sought to meet at 7 a.m. at the Main Plaza for a
day of removing debris from the Cibolo Creek where it
winds* through the city of Boerne.
The flood of June 20 left a great amount of debris, broken
trees, limbs, and trash strewn all along the Cibolo water-
course. For more information, call 249-8173.
(Post 1960 motorized vehicles will not be allowed in the
parade without special clearance) Does your entry represent
a family which has been in Kendall County prior to 1930?
Remember that all riders on floats or horseback or other entry
must be outfitted in pre-1930 dress, or attire appropriate to
their vintage of their entry.

The Department invites all area
residents and visitors to enjoy
August 9 as a play day in Sisterdale,
and reminds county residents that
their funds spent that day will come
back to help them if their property
or lives are ever threatened by fire
or medical emergency.
Though the newest fire truck at
Sisterdale is 15 years old, the trucks
are well maintained. This mainte-
nance requires a constant infusion
of funds for tires, antifreeze, engine
oil, fuel and gas, and replacement
of rubber hoses, gaskets, bearings,
and the like.
Longer range goals include
upgrading the first response
pumper, as well as the “brush”
truck, used primarily for grass and
brush fires. Department officials
stress the need to stay ahead of the
building growth in the county, and
that means being able to quickly
and adequately respond to structure
fires, as well as having the ability to
competently handle grass and brush
fires during drought conditions
when grass fires can turn into con-
flagrations threatening entire subdi-
visions.
A non-hardware expense that the
department has to contend with is
its cost of insurance. According to
Chief Larry Langbein, insurance
remains one of the largest annual
expenses.
Langbein stressed the need to be
especially careful with controlled
burns, as the area has been virtually
without rain since June 20. He said
grass cover is very high due to the
generous spring rains, but that this
heavy cover now provides danger-
