Karnes City is the second stop to state
Comfort football team runs plays during practice in preparation for the showdown against Karnes City.
• By Jennifer Fierro____________
" Managing Editor
When the Comfort Bobcat football
team takes to the field against
Karnes City, in many ways head
coach Paul Talbert’s team will be
looking into a mirror.
After all, both teams prefer to run
the ball offensively; Both teams like
to control the line of scrimmage, the
clock and taking care of the football.
And both teams have defenses that
can force the plays and punts.
But what Talbert hopes, and be-
lieves, may be the difference in the
ball game is the third part of the
game, special teams.
“We need to win the special teams
battle in a game like this,” he said.
Defensively, Talbert used only one
word to describe Karnes City.
“Solid,” he said. “They’re the
toughest we’ve faced in a while.
They’re just really sound. They’re
well coached. They’re in the right
place at the right time.”
The keys will be who controls the
line of scrimmage and who controls
the clock, he said.
Offensively, Karnes City will run
the ball. “They like to grind it out,”
the head coach said.
“Basically both teams are just try-
ing to accomplish the same goal,” he
said.

Boerne boys lose season openei

SAN ANTONIO - Highlands jumped to a 10-
0 lead in the first 100 seconds Monday night
against Boerne and never relinquished the lead
en route to a 71-47 win in the season opener for
both teams.
Boerne, the three-time defending District 28-
4A champion, lost nine players from last year’s
team and is facing a rebuilding effort, particu-
larly in the early part of the season.
Boerne pulled within four twice in the first
half but when Jason McFee sank a basket at the
5:23 mark in the third quarter to cut the Owls’
lead to 35-30, it was the closest the Greyhounds
would get in the second half against the Class
5A team.
The Owls used their height, quickness and a
press to get off to the fast start, controlling the
tip and making their first three shots — includ-
ing two layups — before the Greyhounds
attempted their first shot.
Boerne got on the board at the 5:46 mark
when Zach Bibb hit a shot from the wing to
make the score 10-2. But, five seconds later,
Adrian Balderrama was all alone underneath
the basket to extend the Owl lead back to 10.
Down 14-4, the Greyhounds went on a mini-
run late in the quarter to pull within four. Two
straight buckets by Ryan Smith cut the Owl
lead to 14-10 with 2:23 remaining in the first
period.
A flurry of baskets ended the period with
Highlands up 20-12. Balderrama had a pair of
free throws and two buckets for Highlands,
with John Kalmbach hitting a baseline jumper
for Boerne with 10 seconds left.
When Boerne pulled within four, 23-19, mid-
way through the second period following a
seven-point Greyhound run, Highlands called a
time-out.
Smith ended Boerne’s scoring in the first half
with five points, two buckets and a free throw,
to cut the Highlands lead to six. But with the
clock winding down, Rufus Lott hit a trey to put r y . ,
