The way God works
in lives of His people
I am a firm believer in the fact that
all things work together for those
who love the Lord. I truly believe
that God is certainly at work in all of
our lives, and we see this in many,
many different ways each and every
day. This is a cruel world that we
live in and if we didn’t have some
hope that there is a plan to it all, then
I guess we’d be pretty sad, wouldn’t
we? I don’t claim to understand it
all. I don’t know why bad things
happen to good people. I don’t know
why good things happen to bad peo-
ple. I just know that it’s not my plan,
and I have to go on and try to make
things as good as I can for those
around me that I can touch or influ-
ence in some way or another. People
are so different about the things we
believe in concerning our spiritual
lives. Me, I don’t concern myself. I
figure that judgement of folks is not
my responsibility, and it’ll be taken

A lesson on some spineless backbones
“Courage is the capacity’ to confront what can
be imagined" - Leo Rosten
John Wayne was always a hero to me. Well,
maybe it wasn’t John Wayne himself, but rather
the image that he projected. “The Duke,” as he
was affectionately called, had a special knack
for epitomizing what being a true American was
all about. He was a man’s man - fair, true,
strong, decisive and goal-oriented.
No, he probably didn’t indulge in sensitivity
training, group decision-making or communica-
tion-skills seminars, but he truly WAS sensitive,
persuaded GROUPS of followers what to do,
and certainly COMMUNICATED in an unmis-
takable way. In other words, he had the ability to
focus on an objective, articulate a plan and elic-
it action. One might say then that The Duke
knew who he was, where he stood and didn’t
care what anyone else thought of him, or of his
actions. REFRESHING, DON’T YOU THINK?
So, what’s happened to the rest of the citizens
of this great country?
Too many are virtually apologizing for the
good times, the good things, the good deeds.
Too many are feeling guilty for “having it
good.” Hey, if they worked for it, they deserve it
- whatever IT may be. Wouldn’t it be nice if we
stopped apologizing for being successful?
Wouldn’t it be nice if, as individuals and as a
Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
In response to Ms. Mitchell’s letter about my
pro-gun, pro-rights letters, I am not sure how she
got some of her numbers.
Her source, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention/National Health' Statistics for 1997,
lists the breakdowns as Under 1, 2 to 4, 5 to 14.
We can’t use the 15 to 24 group because the
majority of that group are adults. Let’s look at the
numbers of deaths from this study:
Under 5 Under 15

Looking at the number of deaths of children
under 15, we find that more than 20 times as
many children were killed riding cars, usually dri-
ven by their parents, than were killed by guns.
Two and a half times as many children were killed
while walking than were killed by guns. One and
a half times as many children died from drowning
than were killed by guns. One and half times as
many children died from falls than were killed by
guns. More children died in fires than were killed
by guns. Almost the same number died from stab
wounds as were killed by guns, and more than
half as many died on bicycles than were killed by
guns.
Ms. Mitchell said gun licensing and registration
would not violate our Constitutional rights,
because we license drivers to make sure that they
know how to drive safely, yet we find more than
20 times more children per year are killed in reg-
istered cars driven by licensed drivers than killed
by unregistered guns with unlicensed owners. We
do not have a God-given, Constitutionally-guar-
anteed right to drive a car. Auto license fees (actu-
ally taxes) were imposed to provide funding for
public roads, not tracing drivers or motor vehi-
cles. You do not have to have a drivers license to
purchase a car, nor is a background check
required to see if you are a criminal that might use
that car in the commission of a crime or if you are
a habitual drunken driver or wanted for hit and
run. Also a driver’s license and registration is only
required if you drive on public roads. If you drive
only on private property, there is no age limit, you
do not need a drivers license or need to register
your vehicle. Felons would be exempt from
licensing or registering their guns, because a
Supreme Court decision says that a felon does not
have to say or do anything that would incriminate
himself.
A recent article in the American Medical
Association Journal says that the Brady Bill has
done nothing to reduce crime or violence in
America. Ms. Mitchell said that 400,000 convict-
ed felons have been prevented from purchasing
firearms because of the mandatory background
checks. Where did this number come from? If it is
from felons that were actually turned down by the

try to purchase a gun. Second, it says on the back-
ground check form that it is a federal felony to
falsify any information on the form. If a felon
tries to buy a firearm, he is supposed to be arrest-
ed and receive a minimum five-year sentence.
Criminals buy stolen and illegally imported guns
on the Black Market - obviously these sales are
not reported to the government. The FBI says that
less than 1 percent of the guns used in crimes
have been traced back to gun shows.
Ms. Mitchell says any amendment can be regu-
lated. Her example of regulating the First
Amendment’s free speech right is by not being
allowed to yell “fire” in a crowded theater. The
First Amendment does not give her the right to
cause panic, injury and death. It says that she has

the media.”
Ms. Mitchell said we must create regulations
that affect criminals, but the breaking of laws and
regulations is what makes criminals. New laws
and regulations will not help; we must enforce the
laws and regulations we already have to get crim-
inals off the street. According to BTAF records,
federal firearm arrests have dropped 44 percent
under the Clinton-Gore Administration.
We must learn from history. Gun registration
has always resulted in gun confiscation. This past
century, 56 million people were exterminated by
their governments after their guns were confiscat-
ed, and they could not defend themselves. One of
the reasons our founding fathers wrote the Second
Amendment was to prevent this from happening
in the United States. In the words of George
