Almazan Leaders
Quizzed in Plot on
Life of Cardenas
MEXICO CITY, Aug. 8—(UP)- minister of interior; Gen. Marcelo
Thirty-five leaders of the party of
national unification, which sup-
ported Juan Andreu Almazan, in
last month’s presidential election,
were questioned during the night
in connection with charges of plots
to assassinate President Lazaro
Cardenas and Manuel Avila Cam-
. acho, the government party’s presi-
dential candidate.
They were summoned suddenly to
the office of the attorney general
. last night and examined individual-
ly, it was understood, over a period
of hours.
Emilo Madero, secretary gener-
al of the national unification party
of Prun, was questioned for four
hours. Among others questioned
were Eduardo Neri, president of
the party; Efrain Brito, one of Its

KIDNEYS
MUST REMOVE
EXCESS ACIDS
Help 15 Miles of Kidney Tubes
• Flush Out Poisonous Waste
If you have an excess of acids in your blood;
your 15 miles of kidney tubes may be over-
worked. These tiny filters and tubes are working
day and night to help Nature rid your system of
excess acids and poisonous waste.
When disorder of kidney function permits
poisonous matter to remain in your blood, it
may cause nagging backache, rheumatic pains,
leg pains, loss of pep and energy, getting UP
nights, swelling, puffiness under the eyes, head-
aches and dizziness. Frequent or scanty pas-
sages with smarting and burning sometimes
shows there is something wrong with your
— kidneys or bladder._____________.— .
Kidneys may need help the same as bowels,
so ask your druggist for Doan’s Pills, used suo-
cessfully by millions for over 40 years. They
give happy relief and will help the 15 miles of
kidney tubes flush out poisonous waste from
your blood. Get Doan’s Pills.

ARMY ON ALERT
It was learned that as the ques-
tioning started military authorities
of the first army zone, embracing
the capital area, received orders to
take every precaution to maintain
order Aug. 18, when the newly elec-
ted congress meets.
The government in its series of
summons rounded up the entire
leadership and operating executive
of the opposition political party,
except for those on "vacation" in
Cuba. 52.
The questioning was the result
of charges made in the chamber of
deputies Tuesday night. Deputy
Emilio Acosta asserted that the
Almazanistas were provoking arm-
ed uprising. Then Deputy Manuel
Jasso asserted that they were
pointed, in their policies, toward
assassination of President Carden-
as and Avila Camacho, and that
if either were made a victim of
political passions the Almazanistas
would be responsible.
The men questioned were not ar-
rested and were freed after they
had been examined at the attor-
ney general's office. There was
some speculation whether any
charges might be placed. In any
event the action taken was the
strongest yet against what mem-
bers of the administration call the
illegal opposition of the Almazanis-
tas.________—----------
The newly elected congress meets
Informally Aug. 15 to organise It-
self and appoint members of an
electoral college from its own mem-
bership to pass on credentials of
deputies-elect. Credentials of sen-
ators will be passed by state gov-
ernments.
It has been reported that sev-
eral congressmen of the party of
the national revolution, the gov-
ernment - Avila Camacho party,
have been taking turns sleeping in
the chamber, on a 24-hour watch,
to thwart any Almazanista attempt
to "seize" the chamber or tamper
with the election ballots stored
there.
The new congress meets formally
Sept 1, and is to announce form-
ally the result of the presidential
election soon after the opening
date.

.....Large
we’ve just finished building a
home. We think it about the best
vest-pocket edition of a mansion two
kids ever lived in.
So all our friends want to know
how we managed the deal. The guys
that know our income want to know
if we stole it in the dark of the
night; the folks that follow the
drift of the current want to know
if it is FHA; the couples thinking
about building one of their own
want to know bow much it cost, how
much down and how much per
month.
Well, here goes. We'll list some of
the principles we operated on. Not
all other home-builders would find
all these ideas usable, but they rep-
resent the course we followed. And
we felt like we came out all right.
1. NON-FHA. Too much red tape.
Increased building costs out of line
with increased value. Specifications
arbitrarily set down for all houses
in all sections of the country with-
out regard for local climatic condi-
tions. Specifications higher than
PRACTICAL for poor man.
2. USE SIMPLE DESIGN. We
first planned a house that rambled
all over the lot. Looked good. Then
we decided to try a little house,
simply arranged. Counted up the
floor space in the "little" house. It
was almost exactly the same as in
what we thought was a larger house
conceived in the first plan. Cost of
simple house, much less
3 Don't out-do yourself. Some
folks living in a two-room apart-
ment sneer at the Idea of building
anything less than a six room house
with two baths, a double garage and
100 foot frontage on Sayles. Well,
Mister, we were tickled to graduate
from a two-room apartment to a
four-room house containing twice
the floor space and ten times the
convenience, comfort, et cetera.
When planning a house. It is easy
to add little features "that sure are
nice and don’t cost much.” These
things WILL cost when you add ’em
up. No one thing about a house costs
much—but there are so darned
many items.
4. Consider the investment angle.
Can you sell your house for what
you have tied up in it? Many persons
build homes in which this cannot be
done. They are tied to a home that
won’t pay for itself.
5. Why pay all your life? Several
companies will finance on a 10-year
basis at rates you can afford. If you
borrow for 20 or 24 years, a large
percentage of your payments apply
on interest, little on principal. Con-
sider how much more money you
actually pay out under such condi-
tions.
8. "It’ll cost you more than you
figure on,” friends told us before
we started. In saying this, they ad-
mitted they were suckers. We had a
base figure for which we HOPED to
build the house. Then we allowed a
slim $100 as a margin for contingen-
cies. The base figure plus the hun-
dred was the total we could spend
under any consideration. When “he
bills were counted up, we found we
had spent $65 of that 8100 margin.
And that’s all the sermonising the
editor will allow.

British Planes
Strike Italian
Libyan Bases
By JAN YINDRICH
United Press Staff Correspondent
CAIRO, Egypt, Aug. 8.—(UP)-
British aerial forces today struck at
Italian Libyan bases from which an
offensive might be launched against
Egypt, bombing Bardia and other
Mediterranean coastal objectives and
fascist naval units.
A Royal Air force communique
said that there was considerable air
activity on all fronts, with British
planes gathering valuable material
about the threatened Italian drive
into Egypt.
“Shipping in Bardia harbor (just
across the frontier in Libya) and
store buildings were attacked and
one large building was demolished."
the communique said.
It added that in reconnaissance
operations on Tuesday that a British
flying boat was shot down near To-
bruk, the big Italian base, and that
the submarine base at Massawa was
raided both Tuesday and yester-
day.
"Reports indicate that direct hits
were scored on a naval vessel, the
Quay and a submarine," it added.
"During another raid buildings were
damaged. All of our planes returned
safely."
The British forces appeared to be
giving greatest attention to defense
against the threatened Italian push
from Libya, but in British Somali-
land it was indicated that defense
forces had fallen back toward the
important port of Berbera.
(In London it was suggested that
the British would make a stand in
the hills before Berbera.)
A sudden rise in the waters of
the upper Nile, and indications that
the rise continued, caused anxiety to
authorities here. The level was nine
feet higher than at this time last
year and a continued rise would
mean a flood that might become
dangerous. Authorities decided to re-
inforce the river banks to meet the
threat
A United Press dispatch from
Haifa, Palestine, said that Italian
bombing planes had raided the city
again and had killed one person
and wounded eight but had caused
only slight material damage.
Italians Occupy
Somaliland Port
ROME, Aug. 8.—(P—Italian occu-
pation of Zells, westernmost port In
British- Somaliland, is the first step
in a move by the Italians to join
British and French Somaliland with
Italian Somaliland in the African
offensive now under way, a high
fascist authority indicated today.
(British sources in London said
today Britain might give Italy a
"cheap victory" in British Somali-
land by withdrawing her forces from
desert wastes considered not worth
defending.) *
The capture of Zeila described of.
ficially as of great strategic im-
portance, was announced in today's
high command communique, which
said Zella had been taken after a
three-day march from Ethiopia, 50
miles from Zella at the nearest point.
(The British announced loss of
Zella yesterday.)
Zella, and Berbers, capital of Brit-
ish Somaliland end largest port in
the protectorate, are natural outlets
to the Gulf of Aden—a sort of win-
dow on the Indian ocean—Italians
said.
They said these ports were much
better for their new empire in Eth-
iopia than Jibuti, in French Somali-
land.
The Italian communique today
said armored columns, accompan-
ied by bombing planes, were well
advanced on the way to Berbera,
having occupied Oadweina on Tues-
day, as well as Hargeisa.
Both are about 30 miles inside
the arid country, but a difficult
march of 100 miles through rough
terrain remains from Hargeisa, the
nearest point, to Berbera.
The Italian communique said
nothing of land operations near
Barbera, where the British yester-
day said the Italians were concen-
trating for an apparent offensive
against Egypt along the Mediter-

Destruction of four British planes
—three bombed on the ground at
Wajir, Kenya colony, and the oth-
