His campaign for election as suc-
cllsor to the late Morris Sheppard
brought to Abilenians in a cordially
received address here last night,
Congressman Lyndon Jewison to-
day carried his cause to Big Spring,
Lubbock and Plainview audiences,
gast night here, In a speech that
was. broadcast, he made- a sincere
plea for “national unity behind
President Roosevelt, and lashed out'
at “defeatists and apostles Of
gloom.”
The 32-year-old 10th district con-
ubessman offered his experience and
knowledge of national affairs, and
his devotion and loyalty to the pres-
ident's leadership, as qualifications
for his elevation to a seat in the
United States senate.
-If you elect me June 28,”
he told an audience on the fed-
eral lawn, that cheered him fre-
quently, “I’ll take back to Wash-
ington the message that Texas
tells the world it is all-out for
defense, it repudiates the ap-
peasers and strife-mongers, and
backs the president IM per-
cent." ’
After visits to Camp Bowie at
Brownwood, and to Camp Berkeley
here, Johnson caUed for an end to
strikes that cut Into defense pre-
parations.
NEED MORE GUNS
“The cream of our American boys
are in these camps. In this danger
time, they are waiting for arms,
guns and ammunition. They are us-

ing some equipment, out of date In
ISIS, that ought to be in museums
now,” he said, declaring “there ought
to be no more shutdowns or slow-
downs in defense industries."
The tall, dark legislator struck out
at alarmists and defeatism.
"Fear will not help us through
the emergency, but facing the facts
will," he said
“There, has never been a time
when we needed more the oldtime
Texas pioneer attitude that it can
be done.
“The world is on fire, wheth-
er we like to admit it or “ot.
The most efficient war machine
the world has ever seen is on
the loose.
"We must unite behind our pres-
ident and help him prove that de-
mocracy is stronger by firm, but
voluntary methods, than any nation
solidified under the bull whip. ,
The Johnson City representative

“As members of the naval com-
mittee we have been building two
navies, the greatest the world has
ever known. These navies, out yon-
der in the Atlantic and Pacific,
will be our first line of defense. As
a member of this committee I
tried to bring the navy to Texas.
“We have , a great naval reserve
station at Dallas, giant shipyards
at Orange and Houston, the $45,-

at Corpus Christi and the naval

Texas. More than this, twelve per-
cent of the men now in camps,
training for the defense of Amer-

Concluding his discussion of na-
tional affairs with a climactic “the
job now is to save America, the

troduced by Walter 8. Pope turned
to domestic concerns. ..

farm home is electri-
cated that there’s
issue on
which the candidates agree—the
necessity of all-out effort to build
up national defense.
Representative Martin Dies, con-
tinuing his drive for the senate seat
of the late Morris Sheppard, last
night reiterated in a speech at
Sherman the necessity of electing
him as an endorsement of his ac-
tivities against subversive -.influ-
ences. • %,
In a talk at Abilene, Representa-
tive Lyndon Johnson, whose sup-
porters claim for him the endorse-
ment of President Roosevelt, asked
everyone in whatever occupation to
“defend the country that stands as
the last hope of freedom in the
world."
He declared “The American boys
are in the hands of the finest offi-
cers in the world," but added, “they
have a few trucks and need hun-
dreds more. They need anti-tank
guns and they have none ”
Attorney General Gerald C. Mann
asserted at Fort Worth that if
elected to the senate he would take
immediate steps to outlaw ’strikes in
defense industries and at the same
time make them unnecessary.
He said the power to deal with
strikes resides in the federal con-
stitution.

Camp Engineers
To Close Offices
Offices of Freese & Nichols at
Camp Berkeley will be closed
Thursday night, according to Maj
Richard E Froiseth, constructing
quartermaster.
The firm, composed of 8. W
Freese and Marvin C. Nichols, both
of Fort Worth, did the architec-
tural - engineering work for the
construction of the #7.500,000 army
post now occupied by the 45th divi-
sion.
They were the first to begin work
on the project, first members of
the firm arriving before mid-De-
cember.
Peak employment by the firm
was 187. Yesterday there were only
11 members of the firm at the
camp. They were engaged chiefly
in packing records, equipment, ste.
