$238,895 IS LOW BID FOR
U. S. 83 RE-ROUTING HERE
The State Highway Commission
at Austin yesterday announced that
labor endorsement. Speaking at the bid of Harry Campbell Fort
Crockett Johnson said the labor Worth, for grading, structures, flex-
leaders had found "that they can’t ible base and, asphaltic concrete
make me their errand boy ...
these few labor leaders who do
pavement on 3.2 miles of U. S.
1 Highway 83 in Abilene and vicini-
not zoil their clothes with the sweat
of honest toil . . . have attempted
to deliver the votes of the free
American working men, through
the endorsement of a canditate
who has neither a platform nor
the courage to take a stand on the
issues now confronting labor."
Johnson had talks scheduled to-
day in Athena, Frankston, Jack-
sonville, Rusk, Nacogdoches and
Lufkin.
Stevenson, after an early morn-
ing radio talk at Temple, planned
to go to Canton, Whitewright and
Bonham during the day.
Caso March, candidate for gov-
ernor. said he would make a ma-
jor address from 8 to 8:30 P. M.
Monday over WFAA, Dallas, and
that former Gov Pat Neff would
introduce him March plans to be
in East Texas today and tomorrow
and speak at Corsicana and Ker-
ens Saturday
In Bonham, U. S. Rep Sam Ray-
burn opened his campaign for re-
election last night with a charge
that the housing act and the farm
support program as passed* by the
Republican Congress were not
worth the paper they were written
on.
* Rayburn reviewed his record tn
opening his campaign and said
that he would vote for the world's
largest army, navy and air fleet
so that ‘ international desperados
such as Hirohito, Mussolini, Hit-
ler and Stalin would not dare at-
tack us again.
The congressman charged, that
| had the United States had a pow-
erful army, navy and air force in
1941, Japan would never have at-
tacked Pearl Harbor.
He also reiterated his opposition
to the so-called civil rights bill
and declared that those who In-
sisted in saying he supported it
either "were falsidying or distort-
ing my record.”
