King Cole Hears Protests
From Exclusive Neighbors
LOS ANGELES, Aug. a. un—Nat
(King) Cole, popular Negro mu-
sician, today stood by his decision
to purchase a $65,000 home on an
exclusive Los Angeles residential
district.
Despite a dissonant chorus from
his future neighbors—he hasn’t
moved to yet—the singer and plan-
ist said:
“I’ve always been a good citizen.
I wish t could meet all my new
neighbors and explain this situa-
tion to them."’
Cole—recording and night club
favorite who popularized the hit
song "Nature Boy”—bought the
Ivy - covered, English-style resi-
deuce in the fashionable Hancock
Park district. He explained to
newsmen that he could afford it,
adding:
“This is not an act of defiance.

He challenged the Big Four pow-

States and Russia—last week to
bring Berlin before the council. He
said it would be more honorable
for them to do so than for a small-
er nation to have to take-such s
step.
He said now that he did not know
the final action his government
might take on the Berlin question
but that they were watching the
talks closely.

Guardsmen Kept -
For Camp Training
CAMP RITCHIE. Md., Aug. s.
V—Twenty-one National Guards-
men from an Oakland, Md. unit
who were picked up for falling to
attend sumer camp have been
ordered to remain here for the
two-week training session. Guard
officials announced.
They said six others from the
unit were released and sent home
yesterday after a Ouard board of
inquiry determined that attend-
ance at camp would work a “per-
tonal or business hardship" on
them.=
The men are members of “C’
Company of the 111st Engineer
Battalion, a part of the 29th In-
fantry Division. *
The 27 men, about half of the
company’s strength, were rounded
up Sunday by military police and
brought here to face chargee of
being absent without leave from
the annual encampment.
Brig. Gen. William C. Purnell,
commander of the Maryland
troops at the encampment, said
the absentees would not be pun-
ished
The commander of the company.
First Lt. Stewart F. Hammill. T-.

commission ss a result .or ule uer

He said the men failed to report

bers of his unit had understood

be brought to the council but so
far be has not taken any action.
It was disclosed earlier that
Trygve Lie, UN secretary-general
now touring UN centers in Europe,
considered calling the council's
attention to the Berlin situa” en.
He could do that under a UN
charter provision which says the
secretary-general can bring up
any situation he feels might threat*
en peace.
He consulted the British, Ameri-
can and French delegations. He
was advised by them that they pre-
ferred now to try to settle it among
themselves.
Some delegates have expressed
belief, however, that the Berlin
situation eventually will be before
the UN perhaps at the general as-
sembly veeting in Paris Sept. 21
If so, they say, they expect an ex-
tremely long assembly session.
The Security Council was re-
cessed today. It will meet tomor-
row on the Trieste question.
Chinese Plan
Attack by Sea
PEIPING, Aug. 3. (Govern-
ment troops are preparing for an
amphibious landing at Yingkow,
Manchurian seaport 100 miles
southwest of Mukden, Chinese
press reports said today.
The meat logical jumping off
place for such an assault would be
Hulutao, 65 miles across the Gulf
of Liaotung from Yingkow.
Communist troops have been re-
ported already abandoning Ying-
kow.
Seizure of Yingkow would pro-
vide the government a corridor to
Mukden for the movement of sup-
plies brought in by ship Rail faci-
lities and a highway connect Muk-
den with the port.
For aome days now dispatches
from Manchuria have indicated
government moves against the
Communists are in the offing. Gov-
ernment troops in the Mukden area
have expanded their hold: the food
situation has been reported consi-
derably Improvd.
The military situation in North
China was relatively quiet, but in
Central China the Reds captured
Fowyang, oft-besieged town in
northern Anhwei which served as
a port before the Yellow River was
diverted to its ancient course last
year.
My bride and I like this house ...
and we would like to make it our
home.”
Cole’s wife is the former Maria
Ellington, one-time singer with
Duke Ellington’s band, although
no relation to Duke. Their recent
wedding was perhaps the most lav-
ish ever held in New York’s Har-
lem.
They plan to take possession.
Cole said, as soon as the present
occupant, Col. Harry Gantz, moves
out. .
Cole's purchase of the property
set off a flock of protests by
neighboring property owners.
Cole’s attorney, Irving Kill, said
the musician bad been served with
papers asserting that homes in
that area are covered by restric-
tions limiting ownership to Caucas-
ians.
Cole, said the attorney, had been
approached to sell the house, but
refused.
Pointing to recent United States
Supreme Court decisions outlaw-
ing race restrictions, Coto's busi-
ness manager, Mart Ruby, said:
"I think no legal action can be
maintained."

‘WORTHLESS’ OIL
STOCK PAYS OFF
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3. o_
"Worthless, eh?” said George
Leingang in effect as he had
his name cleared of a grand
theft conviction.
Leingang, 53, of Bakersfield,
Calif., was convicted in 1944 of
grand theft after two men
charged he had sold them val-
ueless oil property in the Cuy-
ama Valley.
Recently, however, e rich
strike was made there, and
Leingang told a superior court
yesterday that he is now worth
nearly a million dollars.
Furthermore, he said, he has
paid the two men $6,500 in
restitution.
The court ordered the rec-
ord of his conviction wiped off
the books.

As every motorist knows, gasoline
mileage varies with terrain, temper-
ature, traffic conditions, speed, and
individual driver habits.
But here, in the chart at right,
you’ll get a good idea of the gasoline
economy you can expect from a new
Packard. . . thanks to Packard’s new
"free-breatbing” engine design.
These figures—taken from a sur-
vey among hundreds of new Packard
owners from coast to coast—cover the
highway performance of the 130-
horsepower Packard Eight, with over,
drive (Packard overdrive is optional
equipment, at moderate extra cost. It
is being ordered on a majority of the
new Packards.)
Study these national figures. And then
come in for a complete local review
of the power story of the year!
