The former President declined
all comment on developments in
that war-torn country and suggest-
ed a similar course for others not
in authority "and not in possession
of the facts.”
“In a critical time like this,"
Truman said in an interview,
"there can be but one American
does and recommends. Any other
course could lead only to con-
fusion."
The IP-year-old Democrat who
held the reins of the U. S. govern-
ment for nearly eight years kept
abreast of developments through
newspaper and radio accounts.

The average player attaches no
great importance to the par-
ticular card that partner leads
back in the suit of the original
lead. To the expert, however, the
exact spot is of the greatest Im-
portance.
In today’s band West opened the
three of clubs. East put up the
queen, and South won immediately
with the ace. South could count
eight fast tricks and de-
cided to make the opponents sweat
a bit on the long diamonds.
As declarer rattled off his- dia-
mond tricks, East chose the three
of hearts as his first discard. On
the fourth diamond West very pro-
perly discarded a spade on the
theory that the defense was hope-
less unless his partner Had high
spades
Dummy discarded the seven of
clubs, and East discarded the four
of hearts South cheerfully con-
tinued with his last diamond, and
all hands discarded low spades.
South bad been hoping to see
a club discard or two, and waa
disappointed that the defenders
had managed to stay out of trou-
ble. Me led a spade at this point
since there was no other reason-
able play for a ninth trick. East
won with the king of spades and
returned the nine of clubs.
The nine of clubs was the all-
revealing spot card. East would
have returned a low club this
original fourth best) if he had
originally held four or more
clubs. The fact that East returned
the nine of elube rather than a
lew club made it clear that East
had not started with as many as
four cards in the suit.
South put up the lack of clubs,
and West won with the king West
didn’t make the mistake of cash-
ing the ten of clubs, since he
knew that South still had two
clubs.
Instead, West got out safely by
leading a heart South won with
the ace of hearts and led another
spade, but East took the ace of
spades and returned his last club
This gave West two club tricks
with Me ten and sis of clubs to
set the contract. /
If West had prematurely
cashed the ten of clubs, be would
have set up declarer’s eight of
clubs for the ninth trick.
His own files from the White
House, losded with information
concerning World War II and the
first U months of the Korean fight-
ing. are under strict guard at the
nearby Jackson County Court-
house. Some of this information,
he once told reporters, cannot be
made available to the public for
25 years—some maybe not even
then.
These files are one day to be
removed to the Harry S. Truman
Library to be erected on the old
family farm at Grandview, Mo.
It la In the interest of this library
project, for which friends sre un-
dertaking to raise IM million dol-
lars, thst Truman is making his
first trip East since he left the
White House Jan. 20
“This trip East is not going to
be a political trip in any sense of
the word," he said. "This is no
time to talk politics."
He had in mind, he said, that the |
first session of President Eisen-
hower's first Congress has not yet'
concluded.
"I want to give the Republicans
plenty of time to make good on
their campaign pledges," he said
with a trace of a grin.
"I don't think I ought to attack
them until they've had a full op-
portunity to do that Let's wait un-
til they make their record."
Truman plans to arrive in Wash-
ington about June 22. From there,
be will go to Philadelphia and
New York.
