the government and to Sen. Guido
Bisori, undersecretary in Italy's
Interior Ministry, which has
charge of non-Catholic denomina-
tions.
Undersecretary Bisori said at a
news conference last week that
"religious freedom is fully recog-
nized in Italy." Later, be added in
a written statement that "any re-
ligious confession is authorized to
operate in Italy without need of
any particular recognition.'"
Bisori said at that time there
are 120,000 people of nonCatholic
faith in Italy, divided among to
denominations. Relations with the
Roman-Catholic Church, the state
religion in Italy, are regulated by
the 1929 Lateran Pacts between the
Vatican and Italy.
Evangelical churches in Italy
quickly responded to Bioori’s state-
ment and denied they are permit-
tad to function freely. Today their
federal council made public its
memorandum, to which, it said, it
had not yet had a formal reply.
The Council represents the Wald-
ensian. Baptist and Methodist
Churches, the Evangelical Italian
Missionary Assn. of La Spezia, the
Christian Adventist Churches and
the Assemblies of God in Italy.
