CALL TO REPENTANCE AND
. NEW LIFE IS INCLUDED
Asks Pledge From Youth of Church
[ to New Adventure in Faith
• and Service .
NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 24. (Bythe
Masoclated Press.)—Speaking to the
% Protestant Episcopal churches of
A the United States in a triennial pas-
toral letter the bishops of the
church today declared: + »
“We would especially warn our
people against the superficial and
false antithesis, just now often,
dwelt upon between the religion of, -
Christ and the religion about'
Christ."* !
The pastoral letter, read by the
£ Rte Rew William T. Manning,
A bispop of New York, in Christ
, 'Church cathedral at the close of the
43th triennial general conference of .
: the church here, gives to the mem-
bership the views of the house or
bishops on problems of the moment
it is issued at the end of each gen- *
eral convention.
After sounding a warning that
“of Christ" and “about Christ" are
not synonymous, the letter con-
tinues: —
“No such differentiation can.be
made by those who believe in Jesus
Christ as God. There is no such
antheals in the New Testament. We
need both the religion about Christ
and the religion of Christ, and the
„ church and the scriptures give us
both. If we are to have a living
faith in Christ we. must know the
truth about Him.” • * *
A pledge from ths youth of the
church was asked la a "call to
young people to new adventure in
the faith and service of Him, who la
more modern than any of the move-
.ments of our day." ,
“We look upou a world- In which
vast changes are taking place,’ it
declares. "In China and elsewhere
-among the peoples of Asia and
Arica, movements and forces are
at work which must have moment-
ous consequences. Some of those
best able to judge the signs of the
times are warning us of the danger
of a racial conflict more disastrous
then any that this earth has yet
known. Throughout Europe there
is a disquiet with widespread
threatenings of social disintegra-
tion. And here in our own land,
-— favored as it is beyond any deserts
of ours, we see much that must give
us grave concern. .
“It is no longer possible for the
. races, of men to dwell separately
t and remote from one another. A
A Towier must now be found strong
as enough to bind men together to
world brotherhood if they are not
to consume each other to world
strife.” -
Pointing out the evils prevalent
to this country the bishops called
attention to amassing of wealth
“such as history has never known
without a corresponding growth to
sense of stewarship and obligation,”
and to “the widespread revolt”
against the Christian ideals of mor-
ality and purity “expressed to much
i of our literature."
W 4The letter closed:
"We call the whole church, clergy
land laity, old and young alike, to
repentance and, new life, to prayer
end sacrament and worship, to faith
to Jesus Christ, the son of God."

ALTUS; Okla., Oct. 24.—Property
owning voters of Altus gave tha
$800,000 Lugert water project a
majority of 77 votes, and thus def-
initely settled the city water ex-
tension problem for this city. Voters
were asked to choose between this
expensive dam construction with an
18-mile pipe line from the North
Fork river which will give south-
western Oklahoma another “spavi-
naw lake with a 5,500,000,000-gal-
Ion water supply and enlarging the
present inadequate flood reservoir
system on Bi tier Creek.
I .They choose the river project with
2M1 of the four wards, giving this
Pproject a majorty. -.......
Only property holding qualified
voters, were allowed a vote on the
proposition end wives of home
owners, unless owning property to
their own name, - wers denied h
vote. A bond election to vote the
$800,000 estimated for building this
Lugert water system will be called
to the near future. This project
‘swill not only supply Altus with an
abundance of good water but will
enalis farmers of Jackson county
to put several thousand acres st .
land under irrigation. The Lugert
danysystem will impound more than
205.000-aere feet of water annually,
which is considered sufficient to
miwm irrigate more than 30,000 acres of
. land to this district. ' .
Altus will not attempt to provide
irrigation for the farmers but will
first taks care of. Its city water
problem, which has been a vexing
one since the origin of the town.
Three engineers have worked out
the project. They are: Webster 1
• Benham of Kansan City, who made
the preliminary surveys and esti-
mates, and P. A. Welty and Paul
_ Rudolph of Wichita Falls, who were
Wrught to Altus- to corroborate
Benham’s findings. E. E. Blake,
chairman of ths Oklahoma Food
Coatrot Commission recently en-
