Pope Takes Broth, Lengthy
Nap, Broadcasts Benediction
VATICAN CITY. Dec 5 u—Pope
Pius XII swallowed a few spoons-
ful of broth today, look a long nap
and then—appearing stronger than
at any time since his collapse
Thursday—broadcast a benedic-
tion by microphone front his sick-
bed to the people of Rome.
R was a "live" broadcast Vati-
can Radio technicians had wanted
to make a tape recording of the
Pope's benediction several hours
in advance, but his nap upset the
sleeping when the technicians ga-
thered in his antechamber in early
afternoon and his physicians de-
clined to disturb him He awoke
only a short time before his words
were to be directed to a ceremony
in St. Peter's Basilica. So the
microphone was held over his lips
for direct relay to the basilica's
loudspeakers and the Vatican
Radio.

opportunity to consider seriously,
and to speak in behalf of, the
blessings and the freedoms and
opportunities traditional to this
nation. Dr. Buchanan said.
Finalists will be presented
awards and certificates at a Jay-
cee luncheon meeting Dec. 13 at
the Windsor Hotel.

"Operation Welcome," as it was
called, saw the “refugees'' travel

prosperous farming district, in

first time that a mock evacuation
had been accompanied by opera-
tions to feed and house the
“evacuees.”
Civil Defense workers under the
direction of retired Army Lt. Gen.
Henry L. Larsen, state civil de-
fense director, sent the "refugees"
on their way from Brighton, a
small community IS miles north of
Denver which served as a jump-off
point
Convoys of 15 to 25 cars, led by
Weld County civil defense officials,
moved from Brighton to six re-
ception centers scattered through-
out the county.
At reception centers, which were
all country schoolhouses, the "ref-
ugees" were assigned to individual
farm houses in case of an actual
atomic attack, these farm homes
would provide temporary shelter
for the Denver residents.

the Oil & Gas Journal
in its monthly survey, the Jour-
nal said today, the September aver-
age was 12,020,100 barrels daily
