Canada Considering
Chinese Recognition
OTTAWA, Jan 17 (—The Cana-
dian government "is giving careful
consideration" to recognition of
Red China.
This was announced to Parlia-
ment today by Foreign Secretary
Lester B Pearson, who visited
Moscow last summer and came
back with a warning to the West
that a bitter period of competition
with communism lay ahead.
Today Pearson made only a
terse answer to a question in the
House of Commons, and gave no
inkling how fast his country would
move on the recognition question.
Canada would be the 30th country
to recognize Peiping. The 29 now
extending recognition include 34
U.N. members and Switzerland,
plus such Communist-ruled re-
gimes as Outer Mongolia. East
