GOP Advantages
Back on the political scene at
home, Foster said the Republicans
have a decided advantage over the
Democrats in the coming presiden-
tial election as far as segregation
is concerned
"The Democrats are facing a
tremendous problem in the matter
of segregation because no matter
which way they turn, they’re
wrong If they oppose segregation,
they're wrong in the eyes of the

morial Hospital where she has been
a patient for the past five days.
The Rotan woman was the first
white child born in Fisher County
where she has lived all of her life,
according to her son-in-law, Jim C.
Watson of Midland, oil editor of
the Midland Reporter Telegram.
Mrs. Green is the daughter of
Rose W. Millsap, pioneer rancher
of Fisher County. The town of
Millsap was named in honor of
him.
He and his wife, whose maiden
name was Hittson, moved to Fish-
er County from Palo Pinto County
about one year before Mrs. Green
was born.
The families of Mr. and Mrs.
Millsap were pioneer ranching fam-
ilies of Palo Pinto County long be-
fore the Civil War and after.
Mrs. Green is the widow of J. R.
wrong in the eyes of the North.
The Republicans don't have to
deal with it," he said, "because
they've opposed segregation all
along. I've always said we need a
two party system all over the-
country It's regrettable that it
only comes into evidence on two
issues — race and religion " *
He cited the Roman Catholic is-
sue when Al Smith ran for the
presidency in 1928 and the current
furor over integration.
Foster said he had no comment
on the President's action on the
recent Natural Gas Bill except that
it was "courageous action" on the
President’s part.
"If you can tell me who can get
gas cheaper in Boston," he quip-
ped. "I'll vote for him."

businessman of Rotan. Mr. Green
moved to Roby before 1900. He
died about nine years ago.
The ranch on which Mrs. Green
lives, located about 10 miles north-
east of Rotan, has been in the
Green family since the early 1900‘s.
• In November of 1955 a new oil
field was opened on the ranch
which is now known as the Lena

$1 Minimum Wage
Law Now Effective
The minimum wage of employes
engaged in interstate commerce
jumped from 75 cents an hour to
tl an hour Thursday in compliance
with the recent change in the fed-
eral wage-hour law .
Other provisions of the change
are (1) overtime pay of tone and
one-half the employe s regular rate
for all hours over 40 in a work
week and (2) a minimum age of
16 years in general employment
and 18 years in hazardous work
Hugh L Cole, field office super-
visor of the Fort Worth field of-
fice of the wage and hour division
of the U. S. Department of Labor,
said the law applies to employes
engaged in interstate commerce as
well as those who produce goods
for interstate commerce.
He explained, however, that cer-
tain types ot employes, such as
those in laundries, dry - cleaning
firms, retail and service establish-
ments as well as those in agricul-
ture. are exempt from the act.

be the candidate." Adlar Steven-
son, a leading contender for'the
Democratic presidential nomina-
tion, said the "main issue will be
the policies and record of the Ei-
senhower administration." He
added that Eisenhower will have
to carry the burden “of what will
be a very rigorous campaign."
Another Democratic presidential
aspirant, Sen. Kefauver of Tennes-
see. commented in Milwaukee:
"The campaign can now be waged
on its merits without mudslinging,
but with no punches pulled."
The Senate's majority leader,
Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson (D-Tex),
who is also recovering from a
heart attack, said he was happy
that Eisenhower "feels his health
has recovered to a point where he
is ready for the rigors of an ardu-
ous campaign."
"The American people will want
a full discussion of the vital issues
of war-and peace before they de-
cide who will be the trustee of
their destinies for the next four
years," Johnson said.
Sen. Knowland of California, the
GOP leader in the Senate who has
been preparing to make his own
bid for the Republican nomination
if Eisenhower didn't run, predict-
ed the President will be renomi-
nated by acclamation at San Fran
cisco.
Nixon also expressed confidence
that Eisenhower would be renomi-
nated by acclamation, and he said
he would be re-elected “over-
whelmingly."
Among the governors, Averell
Harriman of New York, a Demo-
crat, said he was “confident of a
Democratic victory." Harriman
Maryland’s Republican Gov. Me-
Keldin assured Eisenhower that
his state's electoral votes "will be
in your column on Nov. 6."
And Earl K. Long, again to be
a Democratic governor of Louisi-
ana, said a second term for Eisen-
hower would "probably mean the
good man's death."
