The feeling grew in informed
circles that some sort of coup is
imminent in Syria. The national

by pro-Russian army officers led

Hungarians fleeing their home-
land reported they saw 20 refu-
gees who had been shot dead and
left where they lay in a wintry-
wooded area near the Austrian
border.
Jordan lies south of Syria. With
indications that Syria is rapidly
becoming the first Soviet satellite
in the Middle East, Jordanian de-
velopments could extend the
Kremlin influence from Turkey
southward to the Red Sea on the
Gulf of Aquaba.
Bitter exchanges between Syria
and Iraq heightened fears that the
Middle East crisis on the shores
of the Mediterranean was creeping
eastward toward an explosion.
Iraq accuses Syria of waging a
subversive campaign against the

Said. The Premier is a foe of
Soviet encroachment in the Middle

Syria accuses Iraq of conducting
campaigns designed to destroy
both the governments of Syria and
Jordan.
Syria, meanwhile, is casting
nervous eyes toward Turkey, its
strong northern neighbor.
