* * * SPRING OUTING***
Overnight Canoe and Campout on the Neches River Saturday & Sunday, April 9-10
This trip takes us on a relatively remote stretch of the Neches River which has numerous
sandbars providing excellent campsites. The river is still actively cutting its channel in this
section, with the result that there are many sandbars on inside curves and steep high banks on
outside curves along much of the route. Our canoeing will be leisurely and there will be
ample opportunity for scenic side explorations. The total trip length is only 14 miles. We
will be within the Big Thicket National Preserve boundaries the entire trip and there are
several cutoff oxbow lakes and other interesting things to explore. We will put into the
Neches River near the FM 1013 bridge at about 10:00 am, Saturday, and take out at a private
access road early Sunday afternoon.
The cost of the trip is $20 per person for the canoe rental. BTCA will take care of obtaining
overnight camping permits from the Park Service. Participants must provide their own meals
and camping equipment. The trip will be limited to a maximum of 16 people and opemngs
will be filled in the order in which paid reservations are received. If you need a canoe
partner, you can register as an individual and we will do our best to find you a partner. Only
two people per canoe will be permitted.
Reservations must be received in our mailbox by Saturday, April 2. We will mail you an
information packet on the trip about 10 days before the trip or when your reservation is
received, if later. Contact Bob Finch (409)892-8976 or Sarah Duck (713)521-2843 if you
have any questions.
