Old Sol continues to turn his heat rays on Heavenly Houston with un-
erring aim; but Jupiter Pluvius occasionally breaks the intensity of his
wrath with a cooling shower. It is at times like these that the refreshing
Water at the Emancipation Park swimming pool offers a brief respite
from the daily grind. The writer has heard a number of grown-ups ex-
uress the desire to go in the water but are shy because of the kiddies
present. Adults are admitted from 6 to 8 a. m. on Sunday, Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday, and those who are shy of the kiddies can enjoy a
refreshing swim at this hour. Almost any time you can find Miss Vera
Rieras, Mrs. Maggie Lyles, Dr. W. J. Minor, Dean J. D. Bowles, Mur-
phy Landry and gobs of others swimming to their heart's content. Mrs.
Dicie Green Cleveland, a greenhorn ip the art of swimming has set a
new record for beginners. She actually learned to swim in twenty min-
utes. "Believe it or not” and she offers as proof her swimming instructors,
Mrs. Lola Ann Cullum and E. W. Millard.
During a recent exhibition at the park Mrs. Cleveland demosntrat-
ed the first three steps in swimming.—Smart Girl.
MORE GOOD NEWS--Prof. W. L. D. Johnson, Sr. sends a view of Old
North Church at Boston, Mass, and writes: "Many sights are to be seen
here. Do your best with your work." Thanks “Prof.” your advice in the
midst of this torrid Texas heat is very timely. Mr. Irene Godfrey writes
from New York that the National Federation of Colored Wmen’s Clubs
rendered a program at the World’s Fair Grounds with Mrs. Nannie Bur-
roughs as the principal speaker. According to Mrs. Godfrey the speech
was great. Mrs. Godfrey also ate dinner in New York at the home of
Mrs. Ethel Price Jarmon. Later in the week Mrs. Pauline L Lubin
writes from Niagara Falls that she and Mrs. Godfrey are viewing the Falls
together and they plan to go on to Detroit and Chicago together, after
which Mrs. Godfrey will return home and Mrs. Lubin will go to the
west. .. .
’ Mrs Beatrice Barnes has returned from Meridan, Texas and has as
Houseguests her mother, Mrs. I. K Sedberry, Leo Sedberry brother and
z.ephew Charles all of Lubbock, Texas. The party of them left for Mar-
shall Wednesday where they witnessed the graduation of Mrs. Barnes'
brother Douglas Sedberry from Wiley College. The visitors will remain
in Houston over the week-end.
» Mrs. Eloise Cleveland, instructor of Latin at Booker T. Washington
High School, who left the city July 24 is having a grand time and en-
joying a much needed rest viewing the New York World fair and visit-
ing relatives in Philadelphia. She will be away until September.

Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McDade and Mrs. R. C. Cheatman are making a
coast to coast tour during their vacation. The party left during the week-
HOPING YOU A SPEEDY RECOVERY: Charles A. Shaw, executive
secretary of the Watchtower Mutual Life Insurance Company is recov-
ering from an operation performed at the Houston Negro Hospital dur-
ing the week. This is Mr. Shaw's second operation and his friends hope
him a speedy recovery. Dr. T. J. Hackett was admitted to Herman Hos-
pital Tuesday evening very ill. We hope for him a speedy recovery. Fred
Marshall, Fifth Ward printer, who underwent an appendectory at the
Houston Negro Hospital last week has returned to his home and is doing
fine. We write with sorrow of the critical illness of Clifford Den
Mitchell, saxaphonist with Dee Johnson’s. Texans who is critically ill in
a Corpus Christi hospital. He is suffering with double pneumonia Miss
Cleo Oliver is improving from a tonsillectory performed last week.
ON THE CALENDER: Wide social interest is being shown on the ap-
proaching marriage of Miss Maggie Mae Irving and James H. Benton,
Saturday, August 12 at Antioch Baptist Church. . .

"Houston College circles are agog over the drama, Within The Hour
which the class in pity production of the Houston College2′25 X
the Jack Yates Auditorium Friday night. August 18 at 8 o’clock, 9
Ladner is sponsor of the class and play. It promises to be a treat. The
college alumni is busy preparing for the mammoth frolic and floor show
which will be staged September 1, the proceeds of which will be used
toward a scholarship for an undergraduate of the college. The alumni
representatives are: Mmes. Falbia Turner, Emma Wheatley-Hill, Leola
Holmes-Beckman and Octavia Lewis-Curtis.

tended visit to Los Angeles, Cali-

SEA CREST CLUB HAS PICNIC
The Sea Crest Mimosa Club at
Tri-City Bay entertained Saturday
night with an elaborate picnic at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Caeser
Washington. They spent a most en-
joyable evening. Inside were deco-
rated with giant zinnias beautiful-
ly arranged. We were served on
the beautiful lawn with bright lights
all over the yard displaying the
beautiful lawn. Tables were deco-
rated with delicious foods. The
menu consisted of hot barbecue, po-
tato salads, and dill, sour and sweet
pickles. Dessert was plentiful. There
was soda water, ice cream, cake, and
watermelon.
Quite a few guests motored down
from Houston. Among them were
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harrison, Miss
Josephine Green, Messrs. S. S.
Spriggs, Willie Davis, Ephon Cal-
bert. Heard Shaw, Mrs. Bertha
Juett. Some of them spent the
weekend. Among them were Messrs.
H. T. Hilliard, Lawrence Flood, Miss
Thelma McCloud. Detroit Hall, and
McCloud.

Mrs. Vera Lee Small Joseph cel-
ebrated her birthday Saturday
night. Sharing honors was her
cousin, Mrs. D. C. Austin from Los
Angeles, California, who is visit-
ing her. The birthday celebration

named honoree at a miscellaneous
shower Wednesday evening. August
2, at the home of the Branch Chair-
man, Mrs. Ellouise Williams, 3424
Calhoun Road. Hostesses on the oc-
casion were the personnel of the
Membership Committee, of which
Mrs. Gentry North is chairman.
Red and pink rosebuds in crystal
containers supplied the summer
decorative moult. The table was eov-
ered with an ecru lace" cloth, and
was centered with red rosebuds.
Chinese • checkers, bridge and
Bingo, with candy kisses - awarded
as prizes, furnished much merri-
ment for the guests, who numbered
about thirty-five.
A duet “Whispering Hope” was
sung by Mrs. Maggie, Shaw and
Mrs. Deltessa Lee, accompanied by
Miss Vera Rieras.
Numerous beautiful and useful
gifts were received by the honeree.
The planning committee included
Mrs. North, Mrs. King Hughes, and
Miss Addie Cook.
Miss Roberts left Thursday night
for her home in Clarksville, where
her wedding to J A. Stanfield will
take place Thursday, August 17.
BRIDE-ELECT AND
CALIFORNIAN DINE
Ml. and Mrs. W. H. Graham, 2305
Davis were hosts at an elaborate
dinner party Sunday honoring Miss
Maggie Mae Irving, bride-elect and
Mrs. W. N. Croom of Los Angeles,
California. The inviting surround-
ings were very pleasing, indispersed
with beautiful flower arrangements
and potted plants. The guests were
escorted to the table by the host
where a beautiful mirrored center
piece of pink zinnias gave hope and
cheer for the courses that followed.
After dinner the guests spent the
evening on the green velvet lawn
surrounded by seasonal flowers.
Those participating were Miss
Maggie Mae Irving, Mrs. W. N.
Croom, J. A. Benton, and Mr. and
Mrs. W. H. Graham.
MISS REESE IS HOSTESS
Miss Clora Lee Reese was host-
ess to several of her choice friends
Sunday evening at her home, 902
Bayou street. After the girls dis-
cussed the happenings both past and
current they were served a delici-
ous repast of iced cola and dainty
cookies. The grandmother of the
hostess, Mrs. N. A. Duncan presid-
ed over the serving.
Guests present were: Misses Adell
Woods, Lucy Alexander, Josephine
Williams and Clora Lee Reece.
All guests were juniors and sen-
iors of Samuel Huston College,
Austin, Texas.
The Franklin

The picnic was a tremendous sue-
cess. Even the' mosquitoes seemed
‘to know that Franklin Students
were queens for a day—they gave
us no trouble. When better picnics,
are given Franklin’s school or rath-
er Mr. Jemison will give them. Our
entire student body gives three
cheers for our administrationa-

Azalia Stone left Sunday for. Long-
view and Marshall where they will
spend the week .with relatives. A
Mr. Floyd Armstrong and Mis
Kathryn Simon were two of the
first graduates to receive their li-
censes, we are .proud of them as
well as many others, we miss them
already but there are many new
students and with more coming in
each day’ we won't miss them too
much. Out with the old, in with the
new, we say. 3 7

Miss Jordan never stops for a min-
ute, Miss Hubbard has too many
calls for marcells. Miss Griffin,
creates all the new hair styles, no
one could, be nicer than little Miss
McCullough The Mr. Armstrong is
all smiles these days. Mr. Jemison
couldn’t make most of the young
ladies understand polarity in chem-
istry until he illustrated with “boy
meets girl.” Anyone as young as
Miss Hattie Ruth Jemison can man-
age a dormitory so well.
Misses Hannah Davis and Minnie
Elmo left last night for Bryan to
visit relatives. We hope they enjoy
the trip.
WE WONDER WHY?’
Mr. F. A. and Miss H. R. J. were
pretending to be
pretending to e-a-t in the “Y” cafe-
teria Friday, pretty Miss D. H. nev-
er uses that splendid brain of hers.
Miss N. W. gets all the cold drinks
and ice cfeam from upstairs. What
happened: to the other young ladies,
Mr. X, married or engaged. So
many students saw Sunday and
Monday’s picture at the Lincoln.
Something keeps Miss G. R. from an
occasional movie. Mrs. M. W.
changes hair styles each week. No
one can recite on Monday morning.
The Franklin Cosmetologist Club
has begun making plans for a wein-
er roast to be given soon, with our
president, Miss Stone, out of the
city, Miss Lawshe, vice president is
a busy lady right now. *
We will be back with you next
