WEATHER BULLETIN.
I COPYRIGHTED 1895 BY W. T. FOSTER.
St. Joseph Mo. May 11—My last
bulletin gave forecast of the storm
wave to cross the continent from
15th to 19th and the next will reach
the Pacific coast about 20th cross
the west of Rockies country by close
of 21st great central valleys 22d to
24th and the eastern states 25th.
This disturbance will seem to
promise rain but will generally bring
disappointment and will make the
drouth more severe except in a few r
localities.
Wann wave will cross the west of
Rockies country abqut 20th the
great central valleys 22d and east-
ern states 24th. Cool wave will
cross west of Rockies country about
23d great central valleys 25th and
eastern states 27th.
EBB AND FLOW OF SPRINGS.
Most people have noticed that be-
fore a storm springs often oveflow
to a greater extent than usual.
Lakes also ebb and flow like the
ocean but not at the same time not
from the same cause.
The great salt springs in Saline
country Missouri the bottoms of
which have never been found ebb
and flow irregularly sometimes dis-
charging larger volumes than at
other times.
Although these springs are very
salt no one suspects that they are
connected with the ocean and none
would claim that the ocean tides or
wet and dry' weather could have
anything to do with the rise and
fall of their waters.
In large portions of Texas the
rise of the waters are peculiar. H.
C. Smith says: “We are 1000 feet
above Galveston and drill through
limestone from 100 to 200 feet thick
where we reach water that rises
within five to eight feet of the sur-
face. Some wells overflow.
“We are now having hot winds
fronts the north and my wells have
fallen thirty feet in ten hours.
Cool from the same direction no not
effect our wells and winds from the
south bring the waters to normal
height in ten hours.”
The fountains that feed the
springs and wells must be higher
than the latter and therefore the
ocean waters cannot effect them.
But what is the cause of these ebbs
and flows of lakes springs and ar-
tesian wells?
The high and low barometers are
the causes. The atmosphere in the
high weighs more than it does in
the lows and the former depresses
while the later lifts the water.
When the low barometer is ap-
proaching its center far away
covers the lakes and other waters
that constitute the fountains from
which the springs and artesian wells
are fed.
When the low barometer is over
these lakes and other fountains
their waters rise because the press-
ure is less and this affects far away
springs and artesian wells causing
them to fall.
When a low barometer covers the
upper Mississippi valley and the
great lakes Texas has warm north
winds. At the same time the Ohio
valley will have warm south winds.
The water in Lake Superior will rise
and in springs and artesian
wells of Texas lower Mississippi and
Ohio valleys will fall.
As this general low barometer
passes eastward the high barometer
takes its place over the great lakes
the. winds in Texas continue from
northward but changes tccool and
and the waters in the springs and
artesian wells begin to rise because
tlie air pressure of the country from
whence come the artesian and
spring water Increases by seventy
pounds or more to the square foot
of surface.
In the Ohio valley and eastern
states the wind changes from south
to north the weather cools and the
spring and artesian waters come
back to their normals.
Generally on the approach of my
storm wave dates the waters of
lakes springs and artesian wells
will be depressed and as the. cool
wave dates come in these waters
will rise again to their normals.

Murder of a Prominent Man Near
Texarkana.
A special from Texarkana yester-'
day says:
C. C. Quarrells a prominent mer-
chant of Bettie Texas a village on
the Cotton Belt road six miles west
of here was shot and killed by Dr.
T. A. Johnson a practicing physic?
ian of that place. The affray grew
out of dispute that occurred be-
tween Johnson and. another man in
Quarrels' store. Quarrells ordered
them out and Johnson killed him
for doiug| so.—[Hot Springs News.
Mr. News you are at fault. Bet-
tie Texas is as far away from Tex-
arkana as is Hot Springs. The
above message was sent from here
why we do not know or pretend to
say but if you will get your railroad
map and trace the Cotton Belt rail-
road track you will see that you
must pass through Bowie Morris
Titus and Camp counties and half
way through Upsher before you
come td Bettie. The Little Rock
Gazette’s correspondent here was
very much at fault when he put
down a Bettie murder to the credit
of this place. Our people are
strong in condemnation of such un-
called for and injurious reports.
Everybody should read “Coin's
