Senate GOP
Bloc Seeks
Bigger Voice
WASHINGTON (AP)—A bloc of
Senate Republicans, who rate
themselves as liberals, is report-
ed determined to seek a bigger
voice among their more conserva-
tive GOP colleagues. They hope
they will get it without a fight.
Spokesmen, declining to be quot-
ed by name, told a reporter they
expect the group will go along
with the move to name Ser. Ev-
erett M. Dirksen' of Illinois as the
Republican floor leader, but will
insist that one of their own men
be chosen as Dirksen’s No. 1 floor
aide. He would have the title of
whip.
Sens. Thomas H Kuchel (R-
Calif) and Clifford Case (R-NJ)
have been mentioned as possible
choices for whip.
There had been some pre-elec-
tion discussion of a plan to create
the new post of “assistant to the
Republican leader" and fill it
with a conservative to be the
leader’s No. 1 aide. That would
move the whip—from the other
wing of the party—down to third
rank
Spokesman for the dissidents
said they may balk if the plan is
advanced seriously They said

First Round
City Commissioner Felix Ros-
ser's appeal for a permit to build
a carport at his home. 4117 Poto-
mac St., was denied Thursday by
the city's Board of Adjustment,
but at his request the panel can-
celed the denial and continued the
public hearing to 9 30 a.m. next
Thursday so Rosser can present
additional evidence.
On the original motion three of
the five members voted for Ros-
ser's permit and two against, but
it requires four affirmative votes
to grant an appeal.
The board also:
1. Rejected H. E. Vaughn's plea
for permission to erect a garage
apartment in a Zone A 'one-
family residential' area at 942
Blair St., where a single-family
home already exists (Several
neighboring property owners op-
posed the request.)
2. Granted Herman Bettis’ ap-
peal for a permit to build • sign
or painted bulletin on the north
east corner of .Albany and S. 14th
Sts. in Zone A
All the applications had been
turned down earlier by the City
Building Department because the
plans didn't comply with the Zon-
ing Ordinance.
Rosser's request was rejected by
the Building Department because
the proposed carport would leave
less side yard than the ordinance
requires. There were no protests
