HELLCAT NEWS
FEBRUARY 2023
NO. 6-
Published by the
12th Armored
Division Association
Council Reports
Ted Glogovac [L/494], Presiding: With the recent passing
of Bill Funke [A/17], the Association is in need of a chaplain.
The primary duties for that role are delivering the prayers and
invocations during the Annual National Reunions. Because of
that, candidates should be regular participants of that event.
For those interested in becoming chaplain, or if there are any
questions, please contact me directly.
Outreach Committee, Bob Scherer [L/66-92]: I hope
2023 has been treating everyone well so far. It’s been another
tough month for the 12th AD Assn since the last Hellcat News.
In December we lost two Hellcats. Charles ‘Chuck’ Lorenz
[HQ/493] and Wes Ferguson [A/17].
I never had the pleasure of knowing
Chuck, but I extend my deep condolences
to his family. The passing of a Hellcat
touches us all. I did have the pleasure of
knowing Wes for these last eight years.
My first reunion was in
Atlanta in 2014 and I
believe the first Hellcat
to welcome this new
kid to the Association
Charles ‘Chuck’
Lorenz [HQ/493]
was Wes Ferguson. I can still see him in
his cowboy hat outside the front door of
the hotel leaning up against a 1/4 ton jeep
that someone had brought for display. He
welcomed me with a huge smile and a firm,
friendly handshake. One of the best things Wes Ferguson
about talking to Wes is that you never had [A/17]
to feel uncomfortable about not having something to talk
about. Wes had a million stories and was always happy to
share them.
Nina Donath [L/17] shares more about Wes in her 17th
AIB column. She has also included a photo of him. Bill
Vosseler [L/66] shared this photo with the Executive Council
and the individual unit reps, highlighting the fact that Wes is
holding the Hellcat News on his lap. So, even though Wes is
not present, he is still serving by demonstrating the importance
of the Hellcat News to our first-generation folks. Thank you,
Wes, I will miss you. I also offer my deepest sympathy to
Cathy and Richard Goetz [L/17] and their family. Wes was
a great guy.
On to happier events. This month we recognize some of
our Hellcats and Hellkittens as they observe celebrations in
February. Barbara Miller [C/66], wife of Richard, will have
her special day on 5 February - you’d better not forget, Richard.
On 12 February Max and Naomi Eagelfeld [C/82] will

Hello Recon! Once again it’s time for my column and I just
realized that over the holidays I haven’t done much with the
92nd Recon. Let’s start out with February birthdays. On 13
February Bob Spint [F] will observe his 98th birthday, and
then on the 28th of the month Doris Bland [F] will celebrate
her special day. Happy Birthday, Doris and Bob, and many
more!
I hear consistently from my friend, Mary Lou Smith [A].
Most of our conversations are sharing humor and small talk.
It’s always good to get an email from you, Lou!
Caleb Culberson [L] had some great news. He was
promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class, PO2, which is the
equivalent of sergeant in the Army. Good for you, Caleb!!
Long overdue. Caleb’s ship, the USS Truman, is officially in
the yards for a year. I think that’s Navy talk for getting a tune
up and the oil changed. That means Caleb will be around for
2023 and hopefully we’ll see him at the reunion!
As reported before, Caleb is an avid reenactor. He has
his 12th Armored impression officially complete and will
be showcasing it in January, so by next month we should
have photos. He’s also finally back into the War Between the
States as well since his former captain has decided to retire
from the reenacting life and has given all of his Civil War
uniforms and equipment to Caleb. Caleb’s estimate of the
value of that kit is right around $5000, a reason I never go into
reenacting. Caleb is very grateful and honored to finally wear
his captain’s things and return to the hobby he loves for the
160th anniversary events. I dare say we’ll also soon see some
photos of either one of Nathan Bedford Forrest’s or Stonewall
Jackson’s troopers gracing the pages of the Hellcat News. I
