COUNCIL REPORTS (continued from page 1)
celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary! Congratulations,
Max and Naomi! Then, on the 13th, Bob Spint [F/92] will
turn 98. Where does the time go, Bob? On 24 February Adele
Benek [HQ/495] will celebrate her birthday, and closing out
the month and sharing 28 February as their birthday will be
Doris Bland [F/92] and Betty Hayes [DIV/ARTY-HQ] We
wish you all the best on your special days and many more to
come! As always, updates and corrections are welcome.
Every month I always promise myself that as soon as I
finish my articles for the month, I will start a draft for the next
month so I don’t forget things that happen. That still hasn’t
happened. However I did make folders marked Outreach,
92nd and Historian. We’ll see if that helps, but until it does, I
will continue to play catch-up.
I have two notes I received that I don’t think I’ve mentioned.
I received a really nice note from Katherine Lackey [A/23] in
response to the congratulations I sent her upon her selection as
Woman of the Year at the 2022 Reunion. Katherine once again
expressed her appreciation for “such a prestigious award,” and
expressed her pride in her husband Mac’s service, and her son
Geoff Lackey’s [L/23] work with the Association. You are
justifiably proud, Katherine. Thank you for your note. I am
always impressed by the wonderful penmanship of our first
generation. In addition to your kind words, Katherine, your
cursive is quite beautiful. Thank you.
Joe McMenamin [L/134], son of Robert J. McMenamin
[HQ/134], wrote to thank me for my offerings in the HCN,
and particularly liked the mention of Vincent Speranza of
Airborne Beer fame and a native son of central Illinois, Joe’s
neck of the woods. Joe also mentioned that his wife Lynn’s
father jumped with the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day and
in Operation Market Garden (A Bridge Too Far). He was then
trucked forward to fight in the Battle of the Bulge in December
in a summer-weight uniform. Lynn’s Dad was one of the most
sought after and respected guys on the battlefield - a combat
medic. Thanks very much for sharing that, Joe. I hope we can
find Lynn’s father’s personnel file when we visit the National
Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in July.
Moving to more current events, Andrea and I got quite a
few Christmas greetings from Assn, members. In order not to
forget anyone I will just offer a general ‘Thank You’ to all the
kind folks who remembered us.
I hadn’t spoken with Mario Rinaldi [C/66] in quite some
time and we connected. I’m not sure who called who, but it
was an enjoyable conversation. Every time I talk to a Hellcat
I learn more. My notes from the conversation are sketchy, but
at least I found them. I asked where Mario was in C/66. He
was with the towed 57mm anti-tank gun section. In the line of
march they were behind the maintenance section, behind the
kitchen, and behind the ambulances. That must have made for
a dusty ride on dry roads.
I recalled that Mario had been wounded so I asked him to
tell me about what happened. He recalled it was 20 March
1945 near Worms. He was in his half-track on the autobahn
when they were bombed. I believe Mario said that the five
guys in his vehicle were all wounded. He remembers blood
running down his left arm as he held it in his lap. He was
able to wiggle his fingers and figured that was good. He was
