know Charlie Fitts [C/66] will be glad to see them! Thanks,
Caleb, and congratulations again!
I had spoken with Kelly Wilson [L] since I was having
trouble getting in touch with Dick Keep [D]. Kelly said Dick
was doing fine but was still having trouble with his walking.
Yet he’s keeping his spirits up. In fact Kelly was heading
over to his place to meet Dick and go with him to the happy
hour they have there on Friday afternoons. She said it’s pretty
enjoyable. I also asked about Carol’s birthday and she said it
was good. Between Kelly and her sister, they made sure Carol
got her favorite foods, Kentucky Fried Chicken and coconut
cream pie. Really, what could be better? I’m getting hungry
just writing this.
A couple of days later I was able to call Dick and spoke
to him right before the 12th ADA Zoom Call on Sunday 8
January. He said he’s OK but is still stuck in rehab since his
walking skills are not developing as quickly as the doctors
would like. Other than that he’s fine. After we spoke I got
to see Dick, Carol and Kelly on the Zoom call. They look
great. Dick told everyone a story about the two-week trip
160 or so Hellcats and Hellkittens took to Europe in 1971.
It sounded like a really great time. I wish I could have been
there. Great seeing you, Dick and Carol, and of course Kelly.
I highly recommend you Recon folks out there signing on to
the monthly Zoom calls if you can. It’s a great way to get to
know folks.
I had been trying to call Bob and Betty Urbanski [D]
where they are living now. I was able to connect with Betty
and enjoyed our conversation very much. She and Bob are
in different buildings at their place now and are awaiting the
availability of a room where they can be together. Betty’s
always fun to talk to. She took my phone number and will
give it to Bob so he can give me a call. I’m very much looking
forward to catching up with him. Thanks, Betty. Good talking
to you!
Last month I mentioned I had some interaction with a man
named Jim Hyde, Jr., son of James B. Hyde, Sr. [A]. I’ve
since provided him some more information about resources
available through the National Archives, and in doing so I
learned that he lives is St. Louis and would like to meet with
me when I do my research at the Records Center prior to the
Reunion. With luck I’ll be able to talk him into joining the
Assn, and attending the Reunion.
I’d like to end this month by sharing the citation awarding
Harry B. Solomon [B] the Bronze Star.
Headquarters, 12th Armored Division, General Order #63,
dated 29 June 1945, AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR
MEDAL. By direction of the President a Bronze Star Medal
is awarded to:
HARRY SOLOMON, 32 612 390, Technician Fifth
Grade, Troop B, 92d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron,
Mechanized, for heroic achievement on 8 March 1945 in the
vicinity of Grande Roselle, France. Troop B, 92nd Cavalry
Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized was engaged in
a night raid behind enemy lines in the vicinity of Grande
Roselle, France, and Technician Fifth Grade Solomon was
accompanying his Troop Commander on a return trip from
higher headquarters with new orders for his troop, when
enemy mortar fire fell in the immediate vicinity, killing the
Troop Commander. Although hurt and dazed yet knowing that
he was the only person who knew the nature of the orders
his Troop Commander had been carrying, he continued
dismounted through the enemy lines for the third time that
night and delivered the orders to the Troop Executive, thus
enabling the troop to complete its mission. The initiative and
sense of responsibility which he displayed reflect the highest
traditions of the military service. Entered military service
from Bronx, New York.
Tech 5 Solomon was a kid from the Bronx, a B Trooper who
probably didn’t consider himself a hero. He was just doing
his job under very difficult circumstances which probably
did make him a hero. Thanks for what you did, Harry. You
probably saved lives by ensuring B Troop was where it was
supposed to be when it was supposed to be there.
That’s it for February. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!
