Hard work pays off for :--
Brady Elementary kids :

' the students at Brady Elementary School will soon see the fruits of their fund-raising efforts rewarded as the &
construction of an outdoor basketball court is already underway. %
—With no outdoor surface on which to play activities during recess, the parents, staff and students have expressed % •
interest over the past few years in having a court constructed. At the beginning of this school year, the Brady •
Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) teamed up with the staff and students to devise a plan to raise the
$7,500 needed to complete such a task. ,
: "After talking with the students and faculty over the past year, we decided to really go after this project full force,"
said principal Kelly Hirt. "The PTO had some money in reserves, but not near enough to complete the project."
1 With the goal of reaching the $7,500 mark, the students began two major fund-raising campaigns that ultimately
allowed them to reach their goal. One project, selling Bulldog water bottles, netted $1,300 in the fund. The second
project, a Spell-a-thon, was the key to success as over 150 students helped raise over $3,500.

E PLAYGROUND PREP A RATIOINS—Jeff Hanna and Alfred
Hernandez level the forms that will soon be a new outdoor basketball
court at Brady Elementary. The new court is being funded in a large part
by money raised by students through various fund-raising projects.
"The Spell-a-thon actually served ”
several purposes," said Mrs. Hirt. €
"Each grade level was given a list of €
100 words for which they would be €
responsible. The students who wanted €
to participate in the fund-raising went e
out and solicited sponsors or dona-
tions for each word spelled correctly
when the test was given. So while
they were raising money, they were
also learning new words.”
The Spell-a-thon was conducted
last month and on March 22 after all
monies were collected, the student
body was informed that the $7,500
goal had been met.
"This is really a special project
because the students will be able to
see the results of their efforts," said
Mrs. Hirt. "It was very important to
them to see this project completed. I
even had several students in one math
class figure out different scenarios of
how much money was needed based
upon how many people or students
contributed.
"The whole idea of this type of
fund-raising stemmed from parents
asking if they could just donate money
to something rather than purchase
some item from a catalog. We try not
to have too many of these fund-rais-
ing projects, but this one was truly a
success. When we schedule a project like this, we like to try and accomplish several things at once.
The forms have already been laid and holes for the six goals will be drilled on Thursday. The slab is expected to
be poured next week and the first of countless games is expected to be played the following week.
"We have already set it up to where the fifth graders will have the first chance to play on the court," said Mrs. Hirt.
"They are the outgoing class who really wanted to help see this through to the end. After their game time, all other
interested classes will each be given an opportunity to use the new court."
'Fatal Vision’ course gives Lohn ISD
students insight on drinking while driving
Grades six through 12 at Lohn In-
dependent School District participated
in a "Fatal Vision" course on Wednes-
day, April 3 in the Lohn Tabernacle.
The course was given by James
Covin of Lohn with OMS Training
Service of Tulsa and his son, Justin
Covin, a 2001 graduate of Lohn High
School. "Fatal Vision," which is a
course on drinking and driving, is
offered by Covin's company to sev-
eral school districts located in rural
areas
: Deputy C.D. Riley of the McCul-
loch County Sheriffs Department gave
a brief history of his experience with
drunk drivers. His demonstration al-
lowed the students an opportunity to
wear fatal vision goggles and perform
the nine-step walk-and-turn field so-
briety test. The goggles demonstrated
what a person does while under the
influence of alcohol. The demonstra-
tion gave the students an insight into
how they would feel after drinking.

films on drinking and driving, asked
questions and afterwards were able to
sit behind the wheel of a golf cart with
the goggles on. This simulated the impairment people experience when under the influence of alcohol. The students
were given refreshments afterwards by OMS Training Service.
