DALLAS — Vietnam Veterans of
America will sponsor a Memorial
Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at
the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memo-
rial in Fair Park.
The event is one of many in the
Metroplex planned for the Memorial
Day weekend.
Retired Air Force Brig. Gen.
Robinson "Robbie" Risner, who was
held as a prisoner of war during the
Vietnam War, will be the featured
speaker. Risner will be introduced
by another former POW — U.S.
Rep. Sam Johnson, a Republican
who represents District 3 in Con-
gress.
Risner, a POW for 7%2 years, is
the first living person honored with
the designation of a major military
trophy in his own name. The Risner
Trophy is presented to the most out-
standing fighter pilot each year.
Risner has kept busy since his re-
tirement. He organized and served
as executive director of Texan’s War
On Drugs for four years, guiding it to
the designation as a "National Mod-
el" for drug prevention. In 1985,
Risner was appointed as a U.S. rep-
resentative to the 40th Session of
the United Nations General
Assembly.
Johnson, elected in 1991, is serv-
ing his second term in Congress.
During his 29 years in the Air Force,
he served as director of the Air
Force Fighter Weapons School and
flew with the Air Force Thunder-
birds precision flying team.
In recognition of service to his
country, Johnson was awarded two
Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit,
the Distinguished Flying Cross, one
Bronze Star with valor, two Purple
Hearts, four Air Medals and three
Outstanding Unit Awards.
In 1966, Johnson was shot down
over North Vietnam and spent near-
ly seven years as a POW, three in
solitary confinement. Johnson re-
tired with the rank of colonel.
