"When I was told by my physician that I had to have major surgery, I asked myself several
questions: How can I take the time ? What are the risks involved? If there are complications
will the right decisions be made by the hospital staff and my doctor? The answers were
of vital importance to me because of my position at the Chamber of Commerce, and
because I am a single mom with a 5-year-old son.
I had previously been a patient at North Texas Medical Center, and I felt confident going
into surgery that all would be well. Under the expert guidance of my physician, the surgery
team went to work; however, my condition was worse than expected and what should have
been an hour-and-one-half surgery took four hours instead.
1 awoke in a clean, comfortable, quiet room. A nurse was with me and we talked about my
recovery and just how we would begin. It was a team effort right from the start. Another
nurse always came to check on me at midnight and bring my medication. Since I was
always awake, she would bring me crackers and juice and stay and talk with me. She told
me she has been with the hospital 10 years and I could sense that it was a major part of
her life. She was committed to making certain her patients recovered in the best way
possible. One of the nurses on the day shift took time to explain to me about my progress
and encourage me to do a little more each day. The communication between my doctor
and the nursing staff was excellent and they followed her instructions precisely. The result
was a successful, comfortable experience.
I want to personally thank North Texas Medical Center, its staff, my doctor and all of my
friends for helping me through this experience. And, although I had many questions before
my surgery, I would recommend and endorse the hospital to anyone with healthcare
needs.
