Dry Goode Salaries.
New York Star.
“It is not generally known” said
Mr. C. B. Worth of H. I} Claflin &
Co. a few days ago “that some of the
highest salaries are paid in our
business. We are often accused of pay-
ing starvation wages to our clerks by
people who never look at the expense
entailed in running an establishment.
Take the buyers for instance. There
are firms in this city who pay men
from $lOOOO to $30000 a year for
simply being able to tell three quar-
ters of a year in advance what the
fashion is going to be. One gentle-
man who buys for a wholesale house
on Broadway is said to earn $50000 a
year. w
“Dry goods houses are noted for
paying low wages to their clerks be-
cause the supply of clerks is so
abundant. lu some of the smaller
stores the pay runs as low as $3 a
week. But the buyer on whose judg-
ment the sale of next year’s fabrics
depends gets half as much as the
President of the United states. The
Smallest and some of the largest
salaries are paid in the dry goods
business.”
“How does the buyer for the house
distinguish in advance what the fash-
ion for next year is to be?’’
"Ah that is where it requires a
wide-awake man. He must watch
the growing tendencies among the
firm’s richest and most fashionable
customers at home and abroad.
Whatever has become popular among
them will make its way among the
masses and this tide the house must
catch and swim along with it.
“In Europe textile manufacturers
make few goods except on orders.
The buyer for a firm must decide
what his house can sell next season
and order his supplies of cloth made
in advance. A serious mistake might
be sufficient to bankrupt a firm by
leaving them with adstock on hand of
unsalable goods the patterns not
being to the liking of the firm’s cus-
tomers. So you can easily see why a
skillful buyer can command his own
price.”
“How do you select a man for such
a position?”
"Nothing less than a kind of in-
tuition is demanded for such a place.
In addition the buyer must estimate
what amount his employer can sell
ot a given style ot goods. If he over-
stocks the firm then they are left
with old-fashioned articles on hand
which they must resort to the bar-
gain-counter devices to get rid of at
a severe loss.’’
The democratic parry being judges
this republican congress is one of the
most independent bodies that ever
assembled at Washington. Even the
Houston Post is complimentary
where it intended to be denunciatory
says:
Mr. Blaine knocked the McKinley
bill into a cocked hat; Mr. Quay has
destroyed the force bill and now the
New York Tribune is jumping upon
the favorite bill of the Grand Army
of the Republic calling for a service
pension.
This simply means that the republi-
can members of congress are acting
in an open honest manly way. That
they are owned and controlled by no
ring-master. That they express their
honest differences of opinion on the
great questions of tariff Federal
elections bill and pensions and are
not holding their votes or their voices
at the beck and not of any party
leader. When their differences of
opinion are given fair and full expres-
sion some agreement will be arrived
at representing as far as possible the
widest and wisest views of the whole
republican party in congress and
this conclusion will be accepted as
that of the party. The country is to
be congratulated that matters are in
this condition and that republicans
in congress are sufficiently independ-
ent to act honestly and fearlessly
according to their own individual
judgment.
The New Orleans Times Democrat

attempts no synopsis of its scores of
columns but the following figures
will be an index of the Cresent city's
progress: The increase in number of
bales cotton handed as compared
with previous year was 314255; in
sack cotton seed 887214. Receipts
of cotton oil bacon hams flour

There was a slight reduction in im-

over previous year. The tonnage of
vessels clearing her ports was 267-
972 tons in excess of year before.
Her total railroad tonnage in 1888

A QUESTIONABLE DODGE.
It has become so common of late to
regale the public with such very in-
teresting stories about one or another
“curious incident” which stories al-
ways end in some humbug advertise-
ment scheme that one rarely ever
knows whether he can spenu time in
reading any newspaper statement
whatever. The unlicensed extent to
which such practices are being carried
would seem to call for a law to sup-
press the use of the public prints for
purposes of deception for what bet-
ter is it in morals to take a man’s
time under false pretences than to
take his money? Let everybody es-
chew all such dodges and patroniz-
