MONDAY MAY 2 1892.
What San Antonio is interested in
discovering Is the best system of
home government to counteract the
pernicious influences of street educa-
tion.
If some of our pulpits would dis-
course on the physical intellectual
social moral and industrial evils of
general strCetloaflng they would touch
a festering ulcer In the body politic
and one that requires probing to the
quick.
If the gas that is being expended
in Texas in this state campaign could
be exploded in the upper air it might
produce a precipitation of moisture
that would prove the salvation ot the
arid southwest.
.8 - ■■
Free trade graduated income tar
and prohibition are the three planks
in the raft of the cold water crowd in
this state on which they hope against
hope to float into the political harbor.
Dallas is unnecessarily disturbed
about the navigation of the Trinity.
The navigation of Balt Creek by the
Hoggites Is of more Immediate concern
in that city at present.
Louisiana had five tickets in the
field and the regular democratic
ticket polled as many votes as the
others combined. Texas is following
the lead of Louisiana and the result
will be the same as in the Pelican
state.
Altoelt the democratic nominee
of Illinois for governor is unknown
instate politics but the size of his
pile is a known quantity and it was
this that nominated him. His politi-
cal-experience will increase as his
barrel diminishes.
The unduly credulous who im-
agine that Reed is antagonizing the
nomination of Harrison had better
read between the lines of the proceed-
ings of the Maine republican conven-
tion.
There is a every reason to look tor
a republican victory in New York this
year. The signs of the tlmes.aie
much more; propitious than they
were four years ago and a complete
victory was scored then. As It was
then so it will be now only moie
abundantly.
The statement that Hill and Cleve-
land are to be withdrawn from the
presidential race to make way for
Whitney will be believed when it is
done. If Hill cannot secure the
nomination he will name his man
from New York and that man is not
ex-Secretary Whitney but Governor
Flower.
The fire record for April is one of
the largest on the list of disasters
from that cause and the entire globe
is included in the limits.
The Shermanites in Ohio have no
reason to be dissatisfied with the
recent action of the state convention.
It shows that Treasury John and
McKinley are in it and that Ohio
knows its true and tried republican
sons.
Harrison would sooner be right
than the president. He is not abat
mg onejot or tittle ot bis opposition
to free coinage to secure the suppor
of the silver states. This is wise and
patriotic.
The Colorado republicans have not
commended themselves to the con-
fidence and respect of the party In
other states by their action repudi-
ating the administration because it
will not sanction their raid on the
treasury for the benefit of the silver
miners of the Rockies.
The Globe Democrat is sanguine of
republican success in Missouri. Un-
fortunately the political predictions
of the G. D. are seldom borne out by
the returns at the polls.
The old confederates in Missouri
do not forget the record that Major
Warner the republican candidate
lor governor made for himself at the
close of the war as prosecuting at-
torney "or the western district and
many of them will vote for him as
■governor in preference to any man
that the democrats will nominate.
as far as tne county conventions
already met give indication of the
feeling among the Virginia demo-
cracy it is certain that Cleveland will
have almost two to one against Hill
n the state convention. There are
200 delegates who favor Cleveland
and 117 in favor ot Hill with 51 uu-
instructed.
The interference of Governor Bar-
ber of Wyoming with the course of
Justice in Johnson county is likely to
create trouble in that state. The
county authorities demand that the
men who have violated law in the
county be tried by the local courts
and not spirited away by the state
to deteat the ends of justice.
The pocket picking fraternity were
in their element at 'the democratic
state convention in Missouri last
week. Scores of pockets were picked
a dozen valuable watches stolen and
considerable money taken. No clue
to the thieves who were In every
crowd and reaped a harvest when-
ever there was a rush.
The St. Louis Globe Democrat in
Its Thursday issue says “Warner as
the republican candidate for gover-
nor can beat any man the Missouri
democrats can put up. He can beat
Dalton by 20000.” On Friday the
announcement was made that War-
ner was bominated. If the republi-
cans carry Missouri G. D. stock will
go up but there is not a ghost of a
chance of their doing It.
The free silver contingent of the
republican party will not command
any more votes in the electoral college
than New Jersey and she Is likely to
go republican if the democracy put a
free silver plank in their platform.
The threat of the free sllverltes to
bolt the Harrison nomination has no
terrors; it will pay back all that it
withdraws from the republican
strength.
There is a world of nonsense wired
over the country anent Hogg’s per-
sonal habks. It is not against his
peisonal appearance or habits that
opposition Is directed. Texas cares
very little whether the governor
drinks water from a pitcher or from a
gourd pail or goblet; or
whether he eats with a knife or with
his fingers or a fork or a chopstick;
but it does matter as to hie usurpa-
tion of the rights of the citizen ai d
his forcing his personal preferences
on the people of the state in matters
to which they are entitled under the
laws and the constitution to express
their will al the ballot box.
The rule of the majority is the
theory that must prevail in all demo-
cratic governments. It does not
affect this theory that majorities are
always manipulated by minorities
and that ail government is of the
many by the few. The law mbst be
that the will of the majority shall
rule aimply because there is no
other law possible without violating
every principle of democracy; but it
is one of those popular delusions that
obtain in the world for the better
government of tie masses who read-
ily submit to the government of
others under the impression that
they are governing themselves.
Humbuggery in all things and in
the art of government more than all.
The Fort Worth Gazette affirms
that the manufacturers of the state
are afraid of Clark and that the
farmers &re in the same boat while
the railroads and capital are airaid of
Hogg. Of course the conclusion of
the whole matter in the mind of the
Gazette is vote for Lanham. Can
the Lanham organ give chapter and
verse for its statement that the manu-
facturers of the state are afraid of
Clark? One thing may be said for
Clark the democracy of Texas have
always known where to And him.
The democratic journals are not
color blinded when looking into the
the camp of the opposition and the
best of them concede practical
unity of the republican party In the
choice of a presidential candidate.
Right they are. It will be Harrison
on the first ballot.
It is not the nominating states that
are of value to any political party
but the electing states. This fact
should be borne in mind by the con-
vention that meets in Minneapolis.
Southwest Texas continues dry.
Every morning brings promise of
rain and every evening disappoints
that promise. For all the world Just
like election.
The state conventions as they are
being h6ld show the republican party
united on their candidate and confi-
dent of success while the democracy
are divided and discouraged. In
union is political strength and the
taint heart never wins the election.
The silver states are too small to
dictate to the party that shapes the
financial policy of the country what
that policy shall be The republican
party does not propose to betray the
financial Interests of the nation at the
demand of the silver states.
The Humane society of Illinois is
after the fox hunters and has pro-
cured indictments against two of the
wealthiest farmers in the vicinity of
Tuscola. The indicted are on their
ear and will fight the case into the
supreme conrt if necessary. They in-
tend to see if a man has a right to de-
fend his chicken coop or not.
May was ushered in with a violent
snow storm in the Dakotas and in
northern Minnesota. Southwest Tex-
as wants moisture but is not hanker-
ing after it in that shape.
Hogg’s pretended ignorance of the
names of certain dailies that are pub-
lished In Dallas and that have a
state reputation deceived no one.
A six months ostrich would be asham-
ed of hiding its head in such shallow
sand.
The democratic situation is summ-
ed up very briefly. That party can-
not carry the country without the
vote of New York; Cleveland cannot
carry New York; New York will not
Insure the democratic party against
defeat without several other northern
states that Hill cannot carry: outside
of Hill ths democracy have no hope of
carrying the state with any candi-
date that they can nominate. Under
these circumstances what hope is
their of the country going democratic?
West Texas Is preparing to become
an Important factor In the politics of
the state but it will be in the repub-
lican ranks that she will place her-
self.
