WANTED TO SLEEP.
But ho Was Afterward Sorry He Did
Not Stay Awake.
New York Sun.
"My determination to make myself
comfortable under all circumstances
has been a matter of regret oftener
than I can tell you” Is the way to
which an easy-going Southerner began
in an uptown club what turned into an
interesting story. "I have always in-
sisted on having my sleep when 1 felt so
inclined. A good many years ogo I
was in the far west where the stage
eoacbes were considered a luxury. I
took my place in one from the door of
a miner's tavern in a mountain town
the name of which 1 long ago forgot
It was dark when the driver started
the horses. I was the sole occupant
of the old rattletrap and drawing my
buffalo robe about me I turned in for
a sleep. Somewhere I never knew
where I awoke to find the stage at a
standstill. The driver and someone
afoot were engaged in conversation. I
could hear only the sound of the voice
of the man in the road but I distinctly
heard tho driver say that it was darned
strange—perhaps the language was
stronger— that a man should want to
get into a stage at such a place. Then
he said to the applicant:
“Well crawl in ther’ and don’t git
gay with that other passenger. If I
hear anything out of you. I’ll put you
down in a coyote camp and you won't
know you was ever livin.’
“The stranger got in and was my vis-
itor. I concluded to return to my
sleep The stranger concluded he
would like to be companionable. He
began by saying he didn’t blame the
driver. Picking up a passenger in the
dead of night in such a howling wilder-
ness was not safe. I said “no" and
shut up. The stranger said it was a
country full of adventures and that
he had witnessed a lot of them. I
made no reply but he proceeded. The
last I heard him say at that time was
something about a mountain storm In
which he had an experience he would
never forget. I determined not to hear
it and I didn’a. When I awoke the
I driver was at one of the doors of the
coach. What the conversation was
about or why the driver concluded to
get off his box and look in I never
knew. I heard him growl at the
stranger:
“You shut up and keep quiet or you
get out. You was the last in and
t’other passenger was fust in and ef
he don’t want to gab you hush up.”
From the stranger’s reply I at once
concluded that he was a gentleman and
that he had done nothing to excite the
driver. However I had not finished
my sleep and rolled over to begin
again. The stranger laughed good-
naturedly and began another story. I
was determined I would not listen and
I didn’t. I went to sleep. Along about
daylight the stage stopped before anoth-
er mountain tavern. The snow was
blowing in every direction. A blizzard
was on. The stranger left me at that
place. He wished me a very pleasant
journey and said in a sort ot cheery
way that he hoped the driver would be
more agreeable: at the same time he
said that drivers were not to be feared
that as a class they were the soul of
honor. Then he handed me bis card.
It seemed odd in that godforsaken coun-
try in a stage coach too for a strang-
er to be so courteous. People seldom
do that in a railroad train. I shoved
the card in my pocket. I was still
drowsy. I fear I may have appeared
gruff. I slept until I reached my des-
tination. Later in the day I unloaded
my pocket and the card turned up.
Then I knew I had in my determination
to be comfortable lost the opportunity
of hearing some good stories from a
man who became one of the foremost
writers of his time. The name on the
card was Bret Harte.
THE BEAUTIFUL SAPPHIRE.
Country Reached Via the Southern
Railway.
One of the most picturesque and de
lightful sections of North Carolina is
what ie known as the Sapphire coun-
try. This section ie located near Bre-
vard N. C. at an average altitude of
3000 feet and abounds in many beau-
tiful streams and grand water falls.
Of the many attractive features
perhaps one of the most interesting
and picturesque pointe are Fairfield
and Samphire lakes. No wnere else Io
the soutn at this altitude are there
such bodies of water. There are tow-
ering cliffs rising abruptly for a thou-
sand feet from their shores and cas-
cades of rare beauty falling directly
into the lakes from the lofty table
land surrounding.
On account of the elevation of this
section it Is very healthy and partic-
ularly adapted to those troubled with
hay-fever being also free from all ma-
laria or other diseases. A record of
the temperature kept at Sapphire for
four years shows an average of 69 de-
grees for the entire summer.
Sapphire Inn Fairfield Inn and the
Lodge afford excellent accommoda-
tions for guests.

EDITORIAL PARAGRAPHS.
Written for the Light:
Mr. Roberts is quoted as saying that
the law of Utah provides only against
polygamous marriages after the ad-
mission of the state and that there
Is no penalty for continuing to live
with more than one wife If the mar-
riage* were contracted Jbefore thaA
date. In answer to this we need only
consult the constitution of Utah as
•well as the revised statutes in each
of which appears this clause: “That
polygamous marriages are forever for-
bidden.”
There are a number of members of
Agulnaldo's cabinet and congress who
are quite ready to trade their indepen-
dence for an office.

The Hop. Mr. Sulzer of New York
who is one of the candidates for the
Democratic nomination for speaker
declares In a loud voice that he ex-
pects to secure the solid support of the
New England Democratic congress-
men. This sounds big but it onlv
means two more votes.
There was a legal execution in
South Carolina recently and one ot the
negroes executed was so grateful for
the innovation that he made a speech
on the scaffold thanking the public for
its indulgence. '"Hie world do move.”
• * * •
It turned nut to be a mistake. The
Hon. Bill Harrity ot Pennsylvania is
not suggesting either platforms or but-
tons tor the Democratic campaign
managers.
• • • •
A southern contemporary declares
that “Mr. Bryan is a mere man and
not a god.” Can it be possible that
t!he paper has sold out to Wall street?
Apropos ot the Dewey home excite-
ment there is clear evidence that the
admiral possessed sufficient presence
of mind to retain the night key.
The Hon. J'ohn P. Altgeld seems to
have taken on a new lease ot politi-
cal life since th r '"“braska election
though it is difficult to see how he
figured out a “vindication” for him-
self from the result in that state.
The latest prediction given out by
a contemporary is that if Mr. Bryan
can carry New York and Ohio his
chances for the presmency will be very
bright. To this prediction we are
disposed to give an unqualified as-
sent.
• • • •
The annals of athletic fail to record
anything to equal the present exhibi-
tion of base running given by Aguin-
aide’s seat of government.
We concede the ability of Mr. Bry-
an as a talker. He has been accus-
tomed to talk against time in the iwest
but when it comes to talking against
factory smoke in New England we
fear that he will find his match.
The Democratic managers would do
well to call in an expert horse trajner
when the effort Is made to hitch the
Maryland Democratic nag to the Chi-
cago platform.
The good old family parrot belong-
ing to the Dewey family could say
some awful thing If it were permitted
to talk for publication just at the pre-
sent time.
Every Indication points to the fact
that Mr. Hanna will not manage next
year’s Republican campaign but It will
not be because of the Democrats ob-
jecting to him.
Evidently Democratic Chairman
Jones pins his faith to the Sam Jones
vote in Ohio but in this case some
other kind of a pin than a coupling pin
will to be used.
There Is reason to believe that the
Contemplated fight between Jim Jef-
fries and Jim Corbett will excite about
as much Interest as the election re-
turns from Virginia usually do.
Carl Schurz expreeses the opinion
that the cause of anti-expansden was
injured by being associated with free
silver and there are sllverltles who
qre convinced that anti-expansion is
not a proper associate for free silver.
The opposition had better get togeth-
er and decide on a platform that will
stick.
While denouncing Mark Hanna an
Ohio politician broke his arm in mak-
ing a speech. However his jawbone
remained intact and he had no dif-
ficulty in resuming his speech using
the other arm.
Senator Morgan of Alabama places
the situation ' - very striking man-
ner before the country when he says
that expansion la accomplished and
imperialism is impossible.
Apparently what has held the Goeb-
elltes in check In Kentucky is the fear
that any considerable amount of
throwing out would very likely be fol-
lowed by some lively stringing up.
The poor old Democratic donkey is
to be loaded down with the octopus
trust next year. Having borne the sil-
ver lead of several yeans he will wel-
come the change of burden.
Jerry Simpson's paper is called “The
Bayonet.” The name was doubtless
selected in order to keep in touch iwith
the times. So far. it has developed
into a blank cartridge.
