St. Valentine's Day.
The custom of sending valentines
has developed from a lace-edged card
inscribed with a tender sentiment to
the elaborate floral designs made up
by florists the expensive candy boxes
with valentine designs and sentiments
and the giving of ether dainty favors
with beautiful works of art in hand-
painting and lithograph.
In accordance with an old poetical
idea small wreaths of flowers are
put up in dainty baskets and satin
boxes decorated with ribbons and a
catin lowers tn the corner
or perhaps an orchid.
Violets are very popular because in
the language of flowers the violet
signifies faithfulness. Next in point
of popularity is the red rose signify-
ing love and the forget-me-not whose
name speaks Of remembrance.
Candy is a favorite gift for St. VaVl-
entine’s day The young man whose
fate is undetermined is more apt to
send flewers which breathe his sentk
ments —for it to all the fashion now
to send flowers with their sentiments
—but the young man whose future is
settled by a solitaire diamond ring
will send his fiancee one of the boxes
of candy especially gotten up for the
day. But all tokens are accompanied
by suitable verses and sentiments
upon dainty lithographed valentines.
A Handtome Reception.

One of the most cultured audiences
ever assembled in the Grand Opera
house was that of Thursday evening
when Mrs. Alonzo Millett who has
been fittingly balled the "Nordica of

ness of her beautiful lyric volbe.
With easy grace and perfect com-

glare of the footlights and not at all
disconcerted by rapt attention of her
audience. Mrs. Millett took the center
of the stage for the first number ot
the program a selection from ‘ Romeo
end Juliet” and as the notes came
forth clear and pure and filled the
large auditorium with delightful mel-

of sympathy and appreciation between
audience and singer which was indi-
