Boerne bands step out strong
Greyhounds named Hill
Country grand champions
The Boerne Greyhound Band
participated in the Hill Country
Marching Festival in Fredricks-
burg on Oct. 1 and came away
with top honors. In addition to
awards for Best 3A Percussion,
Best 3A Color Guard, Best 3A
Music and first place overall in
the 3A classification, the band
picked up the coveted overall
Grand Champion Award.
“With 23 bands competing
in the event, earning Grand
Champion is a major accom-
plishment,” Frank Foster, head
band director, said. “I couldn’t
• be more proud of these students.
They’ve worked very hard and
really deserve these awards.”
A large group of Boerne par-
ents and supporters were on
hand to watch the outstanding
performance under the field
direction of drum majors Jamie
Heiberg, Vicki Wilkerson and
Catherine Ferry.
In addition to homecoming
festivities this week, the band
will also compete in the Rough
Rider Marching Competition in
Converse and the Harlandale
Marching Competition, both on
Saturday, Oct. 8. UIL Marching
Contest will be in Hondo on
Oct. 15, with the band scheduled
to perform at 5:45 p.m.

HCFS hosts ‘Boerne’s own Project Runway’
The much anticipated Hill
Country Family Services annual
style show luncheon coming to
the Boerne Convention and Com-
munity Center Wednesday, Oct.
12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. has
added a new event - a designer
competition.
Local designers will transform
gently-worn clothing and recycled
items found at the HCFS Thrift
Shop into stylish fashions reflect-
ing this year’s theme, “Re-claimed
Chic - Yesterday’s Apparel Re-
fashioned for Today’s Lifestyle.”
■ “What is so great about this
event is that it helps raise funds
to provide food for needy Kend-
all County seniors, children and
families who are facing tough
economic times. Sadly, the need
is growing and we are receiving
requests from families who have
never had to turn to the helping
system before,” Said Rhonda Jol-
ley, event chairman.
The annual show continues to
grow in scope and popularity, and
with the addition of the design-
er’s competition, this year’s event
promises to be the best ever.
Local designers from Anything
Bling Boutique at The Shoppe,
Lillian’s, Daisy Pearl and The HCFS board president.

Emily Stemen, Lexie Forrester and Kate Malatak, and Drum
Majors Harrison Yount, Courtney Fuller and Kate Naquin.
Gypsy Couture will compete for
a trophy honoring the best design,
wear-ability and use of recycled
materials.
Also new this year, those who
purchase a ticket or table will
have a chance to preview designer
fashions and bid on silent auction
items the night before, Tuesday,
Oct. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at a VIP
wine and cheese reception at the
Boerne Community Center.
“This worthwhile event would
not be possible without the sup-
port of our generous donors and
sponsors,” said Josue Martinez,
In addition to haute couture
and fine food, Wednesday’s style
show & luncheon will feature a
live auction with Forres Meadows
of Texasbid.com. Tickets are $50
each or $450 for reserved tables of
10. The price includes admission
for ticket holder and guest to the
VIP Wine and Cheese Reception
on the evening before the Style
Show. For information, call 830-
