Charger boys win state title

ROUND ROCK - Boerne Cham-
pion head cross country coach
Dave Fulkerson knew his fortunes
had changed for the better when
the Tankersley family decided to
enroll with the Boerne ISD schools
last spring.
The Tankersley had been home
schooling and running for FEAST,
but decided to attend public school
so they could have a chance to run
at the UIL state meet.
Three of the Tankersley ran at
Saturday’s 4A state cross coun-
try meet at Old Settler’s Park in
Round Rock and made their pres-
ence felt. Stephen and Andrew
helped the boys win the 4A state
title, while Abigail posted a top 10
finish in the girls race.
Fulkerson said he’s glad the
Tankersley family decided to
attend public school in Boerne.
“The Tankersleys have made me
look pretty smart,” he said.
Champion has only been open
four years, but this is their third
state title in that four-year period
and it is Fulkerson’s sixth state
championship overall as a coach.
Fulkerson led Boerne High to
two titles in 2003 and 2004, has
won three with Champion in 2008,
2009 and 2011, and picked up
another while coaching in Hawaii.
Fulkerson also won a national title
in 2009.
Fulkerson said this one was
special because nobody expected
them to win it all. The Chargers
were second at the regional meet
the previous Saturday and nobody
on the team had ever run at state.
All the members of the 2008 and
2009 state title teams have gradu-
ated, but Fulkerson said he felt the
team could do it.

Boerne Parks & Rec Dept. receives award
The City of Boerne Parks and
Recreation Department was once
again recognized as a “Platinum
Member City” for outstanding
athletic programming. The award
was presented recently at the
annual Texas Amateur Athletic
Federation (TAAF) awards ban-
quet in Lake Jackson.
This past year the city of
Boerne's Parks and Recreation
Department registered 100 adult
softball, basketball, flag football
and volleyball teams and just over
almost 300 youth athletes in track,
swimming, junior golf, kickball
and other recreation programs.
The City of Boerne has been a
member of the TAAF organization
since 2001. The Texas Amateur
Athletic Federation is a non profit
organization established in 1925
to promote and organize amateur
athletics in the state of Texas.
Membership consists of parks
and recreation departments, indi-
viduals and organizations that are
active and interested in the pro-
motion of amateur athletics in
their respective communities.

DRIPPING SPRINGS - Lam-
pasas, or more specifically, the
Lampasas ground game brought
an end to the Boerne High foot-
ball season Friday night at Tigers
Stadium in Dripping Springs.
The Badgers rushed for 395
yards on 62 carries and racked
up 26 first downs on their way
to a 35-21 victory over the
Greyhounds. All five Lampa-
sas touchdowns came on the
ground - three from Secody
Howard and two from Marcus
Kehoe - as both runners passed
the 100-yard mark in Friday’s
game. Lampasas only attempted
two passes in Friday’s contest
and both were incomplete.
Dane Johnson, whose team
finishes the year 6-5, said they
couldn’t keep up with the Bad-
gers on either side of the ball.

Champion's 4th-quarter rally comes up short
as Mules block potential game-tying extra point
Boerne Champion made a furi-
ous rally in Friday’s first-round
playoff game against Alamo
Heights and scored 20 points
in the fourth quarter, but in the
end, the Chargers came up one
point short to the Mules after
they blocked a late extra point to
hold on for a 21-20 win.
Champion ends its year at 5-6
after they made the playoffs for
the second year in a row. The
last time a BISD team did that
was in 2003-2004.
Chargers coach Danny Thread-
gill said he was proud of his
team’s accomplishments the last
couple of seasons.
“They’re 17-8 the last two
years and it’s the best two
classes in a row we’ve had at
Champion,” he said. “They’ve
accomplished a lot and we’ll
miss them. We have to find
people to replace them and try to Star photo: Chris Tilton
get to the playoffs every year.” Champion's Corey Wood (1) and James Clark (44) chase
