WHEN VIRUS ATTACKS THE EYE
Your eyes, like other parts of your body,
are not immune to attack from viruses. The
diseases the viruses create can be among
the most difficult to cure. There is also the
danger of permanent eye damage or loss of
vision unless viral conditions are treated
promptly.
One of the most common and danger-
ous viruses that may attack the eyes is the
herpes virus. This virus is kin to the same
virus that causes the common cold, cold
sores, and fever blisters. When it invades
the cornea, the outer portion of the eye, it
creates an ulcer on the surface. Undetected
and untreated, the ulcer branches out in all
directions and may cause permanent scar-
ring of the eyes and impairment of vision.
When discovered in its early stages,
however, the herpes virus can be stopped in
its tracks. This virus depends on certain
chemicals for food in order to survive and
grow. Researchers have developed
treatment in which one of these chemi-
cals is altered just enough to stop the
reproductive process but not enough to
make the virus reject it. The virus fails to
multiply and it dies out.
