Life with the paper
By David "Scoop" Johnson
I can remember when Johnny Carson was on a day time
game show called "Who do you Trust." I thought he was
funny. I liked him. After all he was from Nebraska and when
you grow up in Kansas or Nebraska and you see someone on
national television from your state (or even a neighboring
state) you just naturally feel a certain kinship.
I also remember Jack Parr. I do not know where Jack Parr
was from (either New York or California, I'm sure) but I do
know that I felt no kinship toward the man. He seemed like
kind of a whiner. A complainer. Not the kind of man who can
generate much trust in a wind swept state located west of the
Mississippi.
Now Johnny was a good clean faced boy that didn't mind
poking a little fun at himself. He didn’t whimper around like
some kind of a out of work, male, ladies lingerie salesman.
Back in the late sixties I was working for acompany selling
high voltage electrical equipment to the electrical utility
companies in Kansas and Nebraska. Johnny Carson's dad was
the purchasing agent for Community Public Power (Later
know as Nebraska Public Power District). I called on that
company. I would like to say that I called on Johnny Carson's
dad, but I didn't, so I won't.
I guess Johnny's dad must have retired just before I started
traveling into Columbus, Nebraska. Anyway, some how I
missed that man. Too bad because right now I could be writing
this nice article about how I once knew and called on Johnny
Carson's dad. I could tell about what a nice guy he was and how
I knew all along that Johnny would be a big national hit and a
very popular figure and then I could tell about how I use to take
his dad, a nice fellow himself, to lunch at the Platte RiverDiner
down on first and main in Columbus.
I could tell about the time Johnny's dad told me that he was
once real worried about his boy because he was going around
trying to do magic tricks but now he guessed he was doing
okay because he had this regular job, even though it was night
work and in New York, on television. I could tell about how
I told Johnny's dad not to worry, that I thought the boy would
be fine.

Well I could write or say all of these things, the only trouble
is I never met Johnny Carson's dad. I'm sure he was a good
fellow though and I know we would have gotten along quite
well. Maybe in a couple of years, as my memory dims, I'll
remember better and really will have met Mr. Carson and can
write about it.
