Life with the paper
By David "Scoop'' Johnson
I stood in the front yard Saturday afternoon and watched
that long awaited front blow in. It had been hot and humid all
morning and through the early afternoon, but along about 3:45
P.M. I noticed that the northern sky had turned blue.
I could tell it was going to rain. I had been doing some pretty
manual work all day, so I just decided I would go inside and
take a little rest.
On my way across the front yard, I took one more look at
that northern sky. It was really blue now, almost black. The
wind was still blowing out of the south and it was hot. I felt
little trickles of sweat running down my back as I put away the
lawn mower. A real gust of southern wind came up and
whipped the grass in the pasture. I decided to walk alittle ways
out into the pasture and watch the sky.
The dark blue clouds were closer now and moving faster.
The wind from the south died down completely, but there was
a new wind in the cotton wood tree on a hill five or six hundred
feet away. The leaves shook and I could hear the wind as well
as see it in the tree.
The horse and the donkeys and even the sheep, who had all
been grazing peacefully, heard the wind too and turned their
attention to the north. Then I felt the wind. It was cool. And
then it got stronger and colder. The animals moved down the
hill a little ways and turned their back to it.
It was at about this time that I realized that it was going to
rain, and rain hard. I also realized that I had better roll up some
windows and move my truck out of a low place in the pasture.
While I was tending to these things, it began to rain. In just
a few minutes we were having areal down pour. The animals
had their backs turned and humped to the wind and rain and I
was glad I had stayed outside to watch a real front move
through.
I could have been inside, taking a nap or watching televi-
sion, but I stayed outside there and watched the whole thing.
I got pretty wet, but it was worth it. It was interesting and now
some day, when I have grandchildren, I can tell them about
how, back in the old days, I could stand out in the front yard
and watch areal norther blow threw. I can tell about how the
temperature would drop from 102 to 46 degrees in five
minutes. I can make it even more interesting than it really was.
I can go on about how it hadn't rained all summer and how
tough it was. Kids love that sort of thing.
