sion made at the M.U.D. 13 board meeting, allowing plans for single-family
dwellings to proceed as opposed to a possible apartment project in the Sageglen
subdivision.
• The city of Houston lets the contracts on a three-year $16 million project
for the widening of the Gulf Freeway between Gulfgate and Bellfort.
• The Dobie Longhorn varsity baseball team defeats the Port Arthur letter-
’ son Yellow Jackets and claims the championship of Region IV University
Interscholastic League.

. The application for a certificate of need to build a Memorial Southeast
replacement hospital in the South Belt area is unanimously approved by the
Texas Health Facilities Commission in Austin.
• The first professional office buildings, twin two-story buildings, are expected
to open at Fuqua and Beamer in late fall.
• An eighth-grade reading teacher at Thompson Intermediate suffers facial
injuries and loss of teeth after being pistol-whipped by one of four men she
caught burglarizing her apartment.
• The Clear Creek school board expects to make a decision next month on
extending the hours of students in grades one through three to the same time
as grades three through five.

the current 99-cent rate.
• Thompson Intermediate Texas history teacher Larry Spasic is named the
Outstanding Texas History Teacher in the state for 1987-88 by the Daughters

• The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) opens a South Belt-

• The first court case involving health issues in regard to living adjacent to
the Brio Toxic Waste Site begins in the 151st District Court of Harris County
with Judge Carolyn Garcia presiding.
• Lottery fever makes the South Belt area hotter than the rest of the state,
with local residents purchasing an estimated three tickets for every person during •
the first three days of sales.
• Superintendent Larry Vaughn offers to let the board buy out the remaining
two years on his contract after they refuse to give contracts to five principal
candidates Vaughn recommended.
• The three 16-year-olds who confessed to the April 16 slaying/robbery at
a local Stop N Go are expected to be certified as adults.
• The fate of the commuter railroad proposal which features a Clear Lake Line
along Highway 3 is expected to be decided in a special Metro meeting.
