Tas Yellow Fbtxb continues to increase at New

that it prevails as an epidemic, though a large por-

of the Bank Aot, and into the causes of the recent
commercial distress. Xlie report says that a ma-
jority of tbe failures of commercial bousee in 1887,
were among those who bad, witb few exceptions,
never possessed adequate capital, but carried on ex-
tensive transactions by fictitious credit. The par-
ticulars of thirty houses which foiled, show tbeir
aggregate liability to be £9,0S0,000; of tbia sum
the liabilities which otber parties ought to provide
for, amount to £5,916,000, and estimated, assets
£8,817,000. The nature of the business of tbis elasa
of bousee is desoribed aa follows :
"The nature of these transactions was the system
of open credits wblob were granted—that Is, by

id to snob an extent as bad been
agreed npon between them ; thoee drafts wsre than
negotiated npon tbe foreign exobanges, and found
their way to England, with the understanding that
they were to be provided for by maturity. They
were principally provided for, not by staple com-
modities, but by other bills that were seqt to take
them up. There was no real basis in tbe transac-
tions, but the whole affair was a means of raising a
temporary command of capital for tbe oonveoience
of the individuals concerned, merely a bare oom-
m lesion banging upon it; a banker's commission
wss all that the houses in England got upon those
transactions, witb the exception of receiving the
consignments probably of goods from certain par-
ties, which brought a merchant's commission npon
them; but they formed a very email amount lu
comparison with the amount of endite granted.

Borax.—Tbe washerwomen of Holland and Bel-
gium, so proverbially clean, who get up their linen
so beautifully white, use refined borax as washing
>owder, instead of sods, in tbe proportion of a
arge handful of borax powder to about ten g&jlons
of boiling water ; they save in soap nearly half.
All the large washing establishments adopt the
same mode. For laces, cambrics, &c.,an extra
quantity of the powder is u-ed, and for crinolines
(required to be stiff) a strong solution is neces-
sary. Borax being a neutral salt does not in the
slightest degree injure the texture ol the linen ; its
effect is to soften the hardest water, and therefore
should be kept on every toilette lablc. To the
taste it is rather sweet, is used for cleaning the
hair, is an excellent dentrifice, and in hot countries
used in combination with tartaric acid and bl
carbinate of soda, as a cooling beverage. Good
tea cannot be made with hard water; all water
may be made soft by adding a tea-spoonful of
boiax powder to an ordinary Bixed kettle of water,
in whicb it should boil. The saving in the quanti-
ty of tea used will be at least one fifth.

duty to you and the afflicted, to report it.
Our little son's head for some time had been perfectly
covered with sores, and some called it scald head. The
hair almost entirely came off in consequence when a

illcations removed the disease entirely, and a new and
uxuriant crop of hair soon started out, and we can
now say that our boy has as healthy a scalp, and as lux-

fore, and do hereby recommend your Restorative, as a
perfect remedy for all diseases of the scalp and hair.
We are, yours respectfully,

PROF. O. J. WOOD—Dear Sir: I bave nsed two bot-
tles of Professor Wood's Hair Restorative, and can
truly say it is the greatest discovery of the age for res-
toring and changing the Hair. Before using it I was a
man or seventy. My Hair has now attained its origin-
al color. You can recommend It to the world without
the least fear, as my case was one of the worst kind.
Yours Respectfully,
