CHIN v URGED 10 CONCEDE
THE INDEMNITY.
London, Aug 16—Throng
Marquis Tseng, Chinese
embassador to England, and
the British embassy at Pekín
Earl Granville is urging China
to concede the indemnity de-
manded from France provided
the French fleet, shall im-
mediately leave Kalung. It
is considered doubtful if
Prime Minister Ferry would
surrender Kelung on payment
of the indemnity, and it is
believed that the real object
in making the cl im was to
secure permanent possession
of the coal mijes at Kelung.
It is reported that in case
France shoud refuse to give
up lyelung on payment of the
indemnity, England has
promised'to interfere in sop-
port of China. It is confident-
ly asserted that no otfer of
mediation has been made to
France by Euglaod, Germany
or America.'
